Zest Protocol

Holding Bitcoin usually means making a frustrating trade-off. If you want cash against your stack, you either trust a centralized custodian or swap your coins for synthetic tokens like wBTC. Both options carry real risks. Bridges get hacked, and custodians go bust.
<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.zestprotocol.com/">Zest Protocol</a> is pitching a third way.
The team just pushed a limited mainnet demo of its Bitcoin Collateral Vaults live from George Town. The premise is simple: let people borrow USDC on Ethereum-compatible networks while keeping their original, native Bitcoin parked firmly on layer-1. No token wrapping. No third-party bridge operators holding the keys.
"Today you can put real BTC in a vault on Bitcoin and borrow against it on the mainnet," said Zest founder Tycho Onnasch. The goal, he explained, is to turn sitting capital into working liquidity without forcing holders off Bitcoin's base ledger.

The mechanics rely on isolated vaults and cryptographic proofs.
Instead of dumping coins into a giant collective pool, a borrower sends native BTC into a personal, single-user vault on the Bitcoin blockchain. Nothing leaves that setup. The protocol then beams state proofs over to an EVM network, confirming the deposit and freeing up a loan in USDC.
What happens during a liquidation or payback? Everything settles programmatically. Actions taken on the EVM chain feed back to the base layer using verification methods designed around BitVM.
It is a clever setup. Borrowers manage access through their own native Bitcoin keys. To prevent sudden blowups, the contract supports partial liquidations and partial withdrawals rather than liquidating an entire position in one sweep. Right now, Zest is enforcing strict deposit caps on every wallet. It is a live-fire drill, and keeping it small limits the fallout if something breaks under real market pressure.
<h3 id="strong-why-ditching-bridges-matters-strong">Why Ditching Bridges Matters</h3>
Cross-chain bridges have historically been the soft underbelly of crypto. Billions of dollars have vanished into protocol exploits, leaving synthetic token holders holding empty bags. Institutional desks and long-term retail holders simply do not want to take that chance anymore.
Native security matters. When collateral stays anchored directly to Bitcoin's consensus rules, the counterparty risk drops dramatically.
Zest is not starting from zero here. The team previously built a lending market over on the Stacks network, running that protocol up to a peak total value locked north of $100 million with clean books and zero bad debt. Now, they want to cut out the middlemen entirely.

Putting idle Bitcoin to work has become the biggest prize in decentralized finance. Centralized prime brokers want the yield, and decentralized teams are racing to build alternatives using zero-knowledge math and BitVM frameworks.
Big names have already placed their bets on Zest. The project counts Draper Associates, YZi Labs, Trust Machines, Flow Traders, and Asymmetric among its supporters, following its ZEST token release back in May 2026.
Venture investor Tim Draper singled out base-layer custody as the decisive factor. For big capital allocators, retaining control of the underlying keys is the only way this market scales sustainably.

For now, the training wheels stay on. Zest plans to keep wallet-level caps active while third-party security teams finish combing through the code base.
Once those external audits wrap up, the protocol intends to lift the limits, open full production access, and plug the system directly into partner institutional platforms. If the tech holds up under volume, it could finally solve one of Bitcoin's oldest structural puzzles: pulling liquidity out of cold storage without letting go of the asset.
