Bitcoin (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin/">BTC</a>), Ether (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/ethereum/">ETH</a>), Solana (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/solana/">SOL</a>), Hyperliquid (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/hyperliquid/">HYPE</a>), and the wider crypto market shook off the major setbacks of the week by rallying back toward their respective range highs.
The past week saw a flurry of significant events for the crypto market. The US Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points, a decision all 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee supported. In the Senate, the CLARITY Act's procedural cloture vote failed.
Both major US regulators also took action. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed its "Regulation Crypto Asset Transactions and Regulation Crypto Asset Markets" prerule with the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, and the US Securities and Exchange Commission revealed its "innovation exemption," which allows limited onchain trading of tokenized US stocks through qualifying venues.
<h2 id="header-1">Why Did Crypto Rally After the Fed Rate Hike?</h2>
On Sept. 19, BTC rallied above $81,700, while Ether topped $2,600, but the duration of the current rally remains in question. Throughout the week, market analysts shared mixed views about the need for the Fed to hike rates and the timing of the decision.&nbsp;
Leading into the FOMC, the CME Fed Rate tool showed a 94% chance of a 0.25% hike, and in the weeks prior, the market behaved in a way that suggested a hike before <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/article/bitcoin-rallies-80k-shelf-cpi-fed-rate-hike-trigger-new-lows">year-end was already priced in</a>. What was under question was the timing, given the critical importance of the November US midterm elections for the Republican Party, and whether the decision to hike before the end of the year was an attempt to tamp down above-target inflation before it got too hot and “ran away.”&nbsp;
Discussions surrounding Fed independence and Chairman Warsh’s credibility were squashed by the fact that Fed members were unanimous in their decision to hike. Contagion stemming from the US-Israeli war with Iran metastasized in Saudi Arabia after the Yemen-based Houthis acquired new territory along Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast. The damage the Houthis inflicted on the oil processing facilities sent global oil prices soaring. The sharp rise in Fed rate hike odds followed these developments in Saudi Arabia, potentially leaving Warsh with no choice but to hike.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The significant takeaway from the Fed decision was the unanimous 12-0 vote and the first hike since 2023. The shift ends the cutting/pause cycle, which had pulled rates to 3.50%-3.75% by December 2025, and puts renewed focus on Warsh’s framing of the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE) as a key gauge of US inflation. Warsh’s commitment to the Fed’s 2% target and the language of the FOMC statement have some analysts forecasting a hiking regime through 2027.&nbsp;
<h2 id="header-2">What the New SEC and CFTC Crypto Rules Actually Do&nbsp;</h2>
Within 48 hours of the failed CLARITY Act procedural vote, the CFTC and SEC advanced fresh crypto measures. The CFTC submitted its “<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/article/developers-no-action-relief-from-broker-rules">Regulation Crypto Asset Transactions and Regulation Crypto Asset Markets</a>” prerule for White House review, though the details of the framework are not yet public.
The CFTC also announced a “no-action position” for passive <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/decentralized-applications-dapps">software providers</a>, essentially confirming that if specified conditions are met, staff will not recommend enforcement action against them for failing to register as introducing brokers or associated persons.
On the other hand, the SEC’s <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/CoinMarketCap/status/2100595931326361862">five-year “innovation exemption”</a> allows qualifying venues to facilitate limited trading of US-listed <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/tokenize">tokenized</a> stocks through permissioned onchain liquidity pools.&nbsp;
Prior to each announcement, BTC briefly corrected below $75,000 and re-established its intraday range high by the end of Sept. 16. Following the SEC and CFTC announcements, Bitcoin and the wider crypto market rallied back to their respective range highs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
<h2 id="header-3">Bitcoin Price Levels to Watch: $75K Floor, $87K Ceiling</h2>
By Sept. 19, Bitcoin traded at its 30-day range highs, but open interest and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/leverage">leverage</a> positioning data show BTC’s price caught between two price zones. Glassnode identified $80,451 as the breakeven price for corporate treasuries, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://research.glassnode.com/the-week-onchain-week-37-2026/">suggesting</a> that&nbsp;

The spot BTC ETFs have also seen consistent inflows but still require <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://research.glassnode.com/the-week-onchain-week-36-2026/">Bitcoin to trade above $86,000</a> to “put the largest institutional holder back in profit for the first time this year.”&nbsp;

As of Sept. 19, 1-month BTC/USDT <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/liquidation">liquidation</a> heatmap data showed Bitcoin still pinned between a floor at $75,000 and a ceiling extending from $82,000 to $87,000. This is in line with the four-week view that BTC is roughly equally bounded on the upside and downside, hence the weeks of price consolidation as bulls and bears jockey for dominance.
