Ethereum is not a finished product. It is a platform in active development, shaped by a global community of researchers and developers working toward a network that is more scalable, more secure, and more useful for everyone who builds on it. The Ethereum roadmap is the public record of that work a living document that shows what has shipped, what is in development, and what is still being researched.
This article walks through each major upgrade, explains what it does in plain language, and distinguishes confirmed changes from longer-term proposals. Timelines on the roadmap are targets, not guarantees the <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/ethereum-news-today-whale-bitfinex-ai-crypto-scam-eth-price" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum development</a> process is iterative, and scope and sequencing can change as new research emerges.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-why-does-ethereum-need-a-roadmap-span-span">Why Does Ethereum Need a Roadmap?</h2>
Ethereum's core strength is its ability to adapt. The roadmap exists because no version of a blockchain is perfect at launch real-world usage reveals friction, security challenges, and scaling needs that only become visible at scale. Ethereum's roadmap is the result of years of collaborative research across the global developer community, informed by application developers, stakers, and end users who surface the actual pain points.
Ideas typically start as forum discussions on platforms like ethresear.ch or Ethereum Magicians before being formalised as Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Anyone can participate the process is fully public. When EIPs mature and reach consensus among core developers and the community, they are bundled into coordinated network upgrades.

<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-upgrades-already-in-production-span-span">Upgrades Already In Production</h2>
Paris (The Merge), September 15, 2022: The most significant event in Ethereum's history. The Merge replaced energy-intensive proof-of-work mining with a <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/how-to-stake-ethereum" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">proof-of-stake consensus</a> mechanism by integrating the Beacon Chain with the Ethereum mainnet. Energy consumption fell by approximately 99.95%. Mining was eliminated permanently, and stakers replaced miners as the network's validators.
Shapella, April 12, 2023: Enabled <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/liquid-staking-on-ethereum-explained-for-beginners-full-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">staking withdrawals</a> for the first time, allowing validators to access their staked ETH and accumulated rewards. EIP-4895 introduced a secure system-level operation for withdrawal processing, while EIP-3651 reduced gas costs for certain smart contract interactions.
Dencun, March 13, 2024: Introduced proto-danksharding via EIP-4844, adding blob transactions that dramatically reduced the cost of rollup data storage on Ethereum. This was the first step in <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/tag/ethereum" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum's long-term scaling</a> strategy making Layer 2 transactions significantly cheaper for users. Dencun also added transient storage opcodes and exposed consensus layer information to smart contracts.
Pectra, May 7, 2025: Delivered meaningful user-facing improvements. Pectra introduced smart contract wallet functionality for regular Ethereum accounts enabling transaction batching, fee sponsorship, and better account recovery. The maximum effective balance for validators increased from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, reducing validator fragmentation. Blob throughput increased to a target of 6 per block (maximum 9), lowering rollup costs further.
Fusaka, December 3, 2025: Introduced PeerDAS (Peer-to-Peer Data Availability Sampling), which makes data availability for rollups more efficient without raising hardware requirements for node operators. Fusaka also added Blob Parameter Only (BPO) forks a mechanism allowing blob counts to be increased between major upgrades, enabling faster response to L2 scaling demands. The default gas limit was raised to 60M, increasing L1 execution capacity.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-glamsterdam-q4-2026-l1-scaling-and-builder-separation-span-span">Glamsterdam, Q4 2026: L1 Scaling and Builder Separation</h3>
Glamsterdam is currently in development and targeted for Q4 2026. It is focused on two interconnected problems: making the Ethereum base layer more capable of handling greater transaction load, and restructuring how blocks are built and proposed.
Enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS): Today, validators typically rely on external software (MEV-Boost and third-party relayers) to outsource block assembly to specialised builders. This works but introduces trust assumptions and centralisation risks. Glamsterdam proposes to enshrine this separation natively into the Ethereum protocol so validators can safely outsource block assembly to builders without trusting external infrastructure. This also allows validators to process more data, which is a direct contribution to L1 scaling.
Block-level access lists: Currently, access lists in Ethereum specify which state an individual transaction will touch. Glamsterdam would introduce mandatory access lists at the block level mapping all state dependencies for an entire block upfront. This enables parallel transaction execution and parallel disk reads, which directly increases throughput. It also lowers gas costs for state-heavy applications and makes gas pricing more predictable, which benefits both users and developers writing complex smart contracts.
The scope of Glamsterdam is not final additional EIPs may be included before the upgrade is deployed. Developers tracking the full scope can monitor forkcast.org/upgrade/glamsterdam.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-hegot-2027-censorship-resistance-and-native-account-abstraction-span-span">Hegotá, 2027: Censorship Resistance and Native Account Abstraction</h3>
Hegotá is the upgrade after Glamsterdam, targeted for 2027. It addresses two areas that have been long-standing priorities in Ethereum research: making the network harder to censor, and making wallets significantly more user-friendly at the protocol level. Scope is explicitly noted as not final.
Fork-choice enforced inclusion lists (FOCIL): One of the risks in Ethereum's current design is that a single block builder could, in principle, exclude specific transactions from blocks effectively censoring users. FOCIL addresses this by letting a committee of validators require that valid transactions are included in blocks. No single builder can override this committee. This decouples censorship resistance from who builds the block, which also removes a design constraint that was limiting L1 scaling. For Layer 2 users, stronger censorship resistance at L1 shortens the trust assumptions in optimistic rollup exit windows.
Frame transactions: This EIP adds a new transaction type where the account itself defines what makes a transaction valid rather than relying on Ethereum's single fixed signature scheme. In practical terms, this makes social recovery, spending limits, and sponsored gas costs native to the Ethereum protocol, rather than complex add-ons built into smart contract wallets. Importantly, frame transactions also give accounts a credible path toward post-quantum signature schemes a future-proofing mechanism that becomes important as quantum computing matures.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-longer-term-technical-research-on-the-ethereum-roadmap-span-span">Longer-Term Technical Research on the Ethereum Roadmap</h2>
Post-quantum security: Quantum computers capable of breaking current elliptic curve cryptography do not yet exist at the required scale, but Ethereum researchers are not waiting for the threat to materialise before preparing. The research track focuses on replacing vulnerable cryptographic algorithms with quantum-resistant alternatives before they become a practical risk.
Single-slot finality: Today, Ethereum takes approximately 12–15 minutes for a block to reach finality. Single-slot finality would allow blocks to be proposed and finalised in the same slot roughly 12 seconds. This would improve user experience for applications that need to wait for finality and make the chain significantly harder to attack.
zkEVM: Zero-knowledge proof technology could allow validators to verify Ethereum blocks without re-executing every transaction. If validators can verify a proof of correct execution rather than re-running it, gas limits could be raised substantially without raising hardware requirements for node operators a meaningful L1 scaling path.
Statelessness: Running an Ethereum full node today requires storing hundreds of gigabytes of state data. Stateless clients would allow nodes to verify new blocks without storing that full history dramatically reducing the hardware cost of participation and making the network more decentralised.
Account abstraction: The broader account abstraction research track goes further than Hegotá's frame transactions. The long-term goal is to make smart contract wallets first-class citizens of the <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/how-to-buy-ethereum-beginners-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum protocol</a>, natively supporting programmable security, recovery, and gas payment mechanisms without middleware.
Danksharding: The complete version of the blob scaling approach introduced in Dencun. Full danksharding would dramatically increase blob capacity per block, making L2 data storage on Ethereum even cheaper and enabling the network to support significantly higher transaction volumes across the Layer 2 ecosystem.

<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-happened-to-sharding-span-span">What Happened to Sharding?</h2>
Sharding was originally Ethereum's primary scaling strategy the idea was to split the blockchain so that different subsets of validators would only process a fraction of the total data. It has been removed from the roadmap.
The reason is that <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/ethereum-layer-2-explained-for-beginners" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Layer 2 rollups</a> developed faster than expected and are already providing significant scaling. Proto-danksharding (Dencun) gave rollups access to cheap temporary data storage. Full danksharding will extend this further. This combination of L2 rollups and blob data has replaced shard chains as the practical path to scaling Ethereum without the complexity of splitting validator responsibilities.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-will-the-ethereum-roadmap-change-span-span">Will the Ethereum Roadmap Change?</h2>
Yes and deliberately so. The Ethereum roadmap is described by ethereum.org as 'a set of intentions for improving Ethereum' rather than a fixed schedule. New research, security discoveries, and changes in external conditions (like advances in quantum computing) can shift priorities. Some items listed as longer-term research may accelerate; others may be superseded by better approaches.
This flexibility is a design choice, not a weakness. A network that can adapt to new information is more likely to remain competitive and secure than one locked to a fixed plan drawn up years in advance.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-final-thoughts-span-span">Final Thoughts</h3>
Ethereum's roadmap is one of the most transparent development programmes in the <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/blockchain/crypto-news" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">blockchain ecosystem</a>. Every upgrade is discussed publicly, every EIP is open for community input, and the official roadmap page distinguishes clearly between what is in production, what is in development, and what is still research.
Glamsterdam in Q4 2026 and Hegotá in 2027 represent the next concrete milestones bringing L1 scaling, censorship resistance, and native account abstraction to the protocol. Beyond that, the longer-term research tracks on post-quantum security, single-slot finality, zkEVM, and statelessness reflect the scale of ambition behind Ethereum's continued development. For the most current and accurate status of any specific upgrade, the official Ethereum roadmap at ethereum.org/roadmap is the authoritative source.
