Consensys plans to separate MetaMask from its infrastructure business by year-end, splitting the company behind the popular crypto wallet into two independent firms. The Consensys MetaMask split would create a consumer-focused MetaMask company and a separate institutional infrastructure company.
On September 9, 2026, Consensys Software Inc. said it plans to split its consumer and institutional businesses into two independently operated companies, according to the official announcement. This is a plan, not a completed separation. Think of it like a family business dividing into two shops. One shop keeps serving everyday customers. The other focuses on large institutional clients. The existing Consensys Software Inc. will continue as the same legal company. It will rebrand as MetaMask and run the MetaMask wallet and consumer-facing products. The infrastructure side becomes a newly formed company that carries the Consensys name. This includes the Protocols Group and institutional blockchain infrastructure, such as the Linea network.
The announcement names Linea, Besu and Teku among the infrastructure technologies behind the new Consensys business. These are tools that help run and connect to the Ethereum blockchain.
MetaMask says it will remain an Ethereum-first, pan-ecosystem product and company. In plain terms, it stays focused on Ethereum while still working across many blockchains. MetaMask reports more than 100 million downloads across roughly 190 countries, though these are company-reported reach figures, not independently audited active-user counts.
The leadership is set. Joe Lubin will lead MetaMask as chairman and chief executive officer, and also serve as executive chairman of the new Consensys. Mike Kriak is named chief executive officer of the new Consensys, and David Cunningham is named its president.

"Going forward, the two companies will keep building the same ecosystem, just with the focus each market now demands," said Joe Lubin, the named MetaMask chairman and CEO and Consensys executive chairman. Reporting from CryptoSlate separately confirmed the year-end timing and the new entity structure.

This is the second Consensys development we have covered around the wallet, following news that Consensys plans to make MetaMask a standalone company. It also lands as rivals reshape their own wallets, such as Coinbase restoring its Wallet name while shifting its Base app toward trading.

Consensys expects to complete the separation by the end of 2026. That is a target, not a confirmed completion date.

The announcement does not lay out interim milestones or exact closing conditions. Readers should treat "by year-end" as the company's stated goal, which refers here to the end of 2026.
No corporate filing or transaction agreement has been published to set a precise completion date. So the implementation schedule remains open until the company shares more detail.

What remains unclear about the MetaMask separation

Several important details are missing from the announcement itself. That is different from saying Consensys has hidden them; the plan is simply early.
The announcement does not detail the ownership percentages, financing or board composition of the two companies. It also does not spell out the operational relationship between MetaMask and the new Consensys after the split.
For everyday users, the headline does not establish any change to service access, integrations or customer terms. One secondary report attributed a user-reassurance statement to MetaMask, but the directly fetched release did not contain that wording, so treat it as unconfirmed.
The broader crypto market showed no clear reaction tied to this news. Ethereum traded near $2,458 during research, down a fraction over 24 hours, and no evidence links that move to the separation.
What this means for you: If you hold crypto in MetaMask, nothing in this announcement requires action today. Watch for official closing details before the end of 2026, and rely on Consensys or MetaMask directly for any instructions rather than secondhand summaries.
