The confirmed change is narrow, but recent developer updates place it within a wider strategy. Pi is making applications easier to build while directing subsidies and visibility toward products that generate measurable activity.

September 15 is Pi’s Mainnet target

Pi Network’s official announcement channel named September 15, 2026, as the target for moving Mainnet to Protocol 27. Testing is underway, but Pi had not published a final deployment confirmation or detailed implementation notes on its website as of September 10.

Protocol 27 follows the completed Protocol 26 Mainnet upgrade and is the final planned step in the current rollout. Until the Core Team confirms completion, September 15 remains the intended deployment date rather than a guaranteed activation.

The announcement contains no instructions for a token swap, wallet migration or balance claim. Pi’s wallet safety guidance says users should enter their passphrase only through the official Pi Wallet at wallet.pinet.com inside Pi Browser.

What smart-contract authentication means

Authentication controls how accounts and applications approve transactions. Pi says Protocol 27 will provide more flexible and secure authentication capabilities, allowing more advanced authorization methods for smart-contract activity.

The Core Team has not yet documented those methods in enough detail to establish which configurations developers will receive. Claims about specific account structures or approval systems would therefore go beyond the official announcement.

The upgrade concerns the network layer rather than a new consumer interface. Its effect will become visible when developers incorporate the new authorization options into working applications.

Pi’s DEX remains a separate Testnet product

The official Protocol 27 announcement does not include a Mainnet launch for Pi’s decentralized exchange, automated market maker, order book or revised RPC infrastructure. Pi has been testing some of those products separately through Pi Launchpad.

Its second test token, SLICE, gave users access to an automated liquidity pool alongside order-book trading on the Pi DEX. According to the official Launchpad update, more than 242,000 participants committed 15.92 million Test-Pi during the June test.

SLICE was connected to the working Slice of Pi game, allowing the team to examine how product engagement affected participation. Pi states that SLICE will never move to Mainnet and that the results will help refine Launchpad before a future Mainnet version. No launch date for that version has been announced.

Protocol 27 fits Pi’s wider developer strategy

The authentication upgrade arrives alongside smaller changes aimed at reducing the work required to create and maintain Pi applications. On September 4, the Core Team introduced local storage, an app-specific staking data API and native file sharing through Pi.shareFile.

Local storage allows selected Pi Browser apps to keep preferences and session data on a user’s device, reducing some backend requirements. The staking API gives an application access to the effective amount a user has staked specifically for it, while Pi.shareFile lets apps use a phone’s native sharing functions for files, videos and receipts.

These three Pi Network utility developments address practical tasks inside applications rather than adding another broad ecosystem promise. Pi also replaced its fragmented technical resources with a single documentation portal covering registration, sandbox testing, authentication, payments and Mainnet preparation.

Pi is tying support to application activity

The clearest indication of Pi’s direction comes from how it now allocates resources. Until August 24, creators paid a subsidized fee of 0.25 PI to create an application in Pi App Studio and another 0.25 PI for each edit. The revised model more closely reflects the underlying cost of the AI services used for each task.

Lower subsidized pricing remains available to creators whose applications demonstrate utility through activity from distinct users. Pi plans to review eligibility regularly, giving creators an incentive to improve products that initially fail to qualify. The pricing update also reduces the resources spent on abandoned experiments and spam.

Pi Desktop version 0.6.3 applies a similar measure to discovery. Community SoloHost applications are now ranked partly by the number of people currently running them. The update also added readiness checks intended to reduce connection errors and introduced new tools for testing and troubleshooting applications.

Together, these policies suggest that Pi is moving beyond app counts as its main measure of ecosystem progress. App Studio subsidies now consider distinct-user activity, while SoloHost rankings reflect whether an application is currently running.

What to verify after September 15

Deployment confirmation: Pi should explicitly confirm that Mainnet has completed the move to Protocol 27.

Final technical scope: Release notes should explain the available authentication methods and any requirements for developers or node operators.

Application adoption: Developers must begin using the capability in live products before the upgrade can affect everyday users.

A successful deployment would complete Pi’s staged protocol rollout. The more useful test will come afterward: whether developers adopt the new authorization options and whether Pi’s activity-based incentives produce applications that people continue to use.
