<p>Hargreaves Lansdown began offering nine Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded notes to eligible UK clients through its Advanced Investing service on September 3, 2026, opening a route to the products that excludes the platform’s mainstream Stocks and Shares ISA accounts. The range spans issuers including iShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, CoinShares and Bitwise.</p><p>At one of the UK’s largest investment platforms, the move puts a more guarded approach to <a href="https://cryptodaily.co.uk/tag/crypto" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto products</a> into practice: clients seeking access must meet Advanced Investing requirements instead of simply buying the notes through a standard retail dealing journey.</p><h2 id="hl-adds-nine-bitcoin-and-ethereum-etns-through-advanced-investing">HL adds nine Bitcoin and Ethereum ETNs through Advanced Investing</h2><p>The nine ETNs carry annual product charges ranging from 0% to 0.35%, according to <a href="https://www.crowdfundinsider.com/2026/09/305941-hargreaves-lansdown-opens-bitcoin-and-ethereum-etns-to-qualified-uk-investors/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Crowdfund Insider</a>, which reported the September 3 launch. The selection gives eligible clients exposure through notes linked to Bitcoin or Ethereum rather than direct purchases of the underlying cryptocurrencies.</p><p>Issuers in the initial range are iShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, CoinShares and Bitwise. The available fee range means costs differ by product, while the platform’s access rules remain common to UK-domiciled clients using the service.</p><p>Hargreaves Lansdown is routing the products through Advanced Investing, a service category used for investments that require additional client checks. That structure is central to the rollout: the firm is making the ETNs available, but under a framework designed for clients it considers able to access advanced investments.</p><h2 id="self-certification-suitability-checks-and-account-limits-shape-access">Self-certification, suitability checks and account limits shape access</h2><p>Under Hargreaves Lansdown’s published terms, UK-domiciled clients must self-certify as advanced investors, pass an appropriateness assessment and complete a 24-hour cooling-off period before they can trade <a href="https://cryptodaily.co.uk/stocks-glossary/etp-definition" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto ETNs</a>. The requirements create a narrower entry point than a conventional listed fund or share available through a regular account.</p><p>The platform says the notes can be held in a Fund and Share Account or a SIPP. They are not eligible for a Stocks and Shares ISA, according to <a href="https://www.hl.co.uk/investment-services/advanced-investments/crypto-etns" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Hargreaves Lansdown’s crypto ETN information page</a>.</p><p>The ETNs can be held in a SIPP or Fund and Share Account under HL’s terms, but not in an ISA. That distinction matters for investors who use ISAs as their principal investment wrapper.</p><h2 id="hl-s-rollout-follows-the-fca-s-reopening-of-retail-crypto-etn-access">HL’s rollout follows the FCA’s reopening of retail crypto ETN access</h2><p>Hargreaves Lansdown’s offering follows a regulatory change that reopened retail access to qualifying crypto ETNs in the UK. The Financial Conduct Authority said retail investors could access qualifying products from October 8, 2025, provided they were listed on the FCA Official List and admitted to trading on a UK Recognised Investment Exchange.</p><p>The change did not create a blanket route for every crypto-linked product. The FCA’s conditions tie retail availability to the listing and trading status of the ETN, while platforms can impose their own distribution and client-access controls.</p><p>In that setting, HL’s use of self-certification, an appropriateness assessment and a cooling-off period represents the platform-level layer of the rollout. The FCA’s decision established the circumstances in which qualifying ETNs could be made available to retail investors; HL has chosen to offer them through its Advanced Investing safeguards.</p><h2 id="the-launch-implements-hl-s-earlier-conditional-crypto-stance">The launch implements HL’s earlier conditional crypto stance</h2><p>Hargreaves Lansdown’s earlier position was conditional: it said crypto ETN trading would be offered only to appropriate clients after additional safeguards were added. In the same <a href="https://www.hl.co.uk/investment-services/crypto-statement" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">previous crypto statement</a>, HL said Bitcoin should not be treated as a conventional asset class.</p><p>That position is now reflected in the structure of Advanced Investing.
