OCEAN, the non-custodial Bitcoin mining pool, has ended support for the BIP-110 fork chain after mining activity on that chain declined, a decision that removes one of the fork's remaining operators and narrows the experiment's footprint on the Bitcoin network.

Why OCEAN Ended Support for the BIP-110 Fork Chain

OCEAN said it discontinued backend support for the BIP-110 chain, meaning the pool will no longer direct hashrate toward or build blocks under that fork's ruleset, according to OCEAN's announcement. BIP-110 is a proposed fork ruleset that miners must actively choose to enforce; without a pool routing work to it, that enforcement path loses its operator. For related coverage, see Fetch.ai and Ocean Settle $120M Token Dispute.

The stated cause was a drop in mining activity rather than a policy dispute, as reported by Bitcoin.com News. The Roughnecks mining group also halted BIP-110 standard mining amid the decline in OCEAN's associated hashrate, per reporting on the Roughnecks halt.

What changed: OCEAN stopped supporting the BIP-110 fork chain on its backend.

Stated cause: A decline in mining activity on the chain, not an ideological reversal.

How Lower Mining Activity Changed the Fork Chain's Viability

A fork chain has no independent existence beyond the miners who commit hashrate to it; blocks are only produced, and rules only enforced, while participants keep pointing work at that ruleset. When that participation thins, the chain's ability to advance and stay operationally meaningful weakens with it. For related coverage, see Ocean Protocol Exits ASI Alliance Over Governance Disputes.

Miner incentives sit at the center of that dynamic. Hashrate follows expected reward, and when a fork chain draws too little sustained participation to justify the operational cost of maintaining separate backend infrastructure, continuing to support it becomes difficult to defend on practical grounds. For related coverage, see Ocean, Fetch.ai Clash Leads to Binance Restrictions.

Based on the context provided, the withdrawal reads as an operational response to falling activity rather than a rejection of the proposal itself, consistent with reporting that tied the Roughnecks halt to OCEAN's hashrate decline. For related coverage, see Ocean Protocol Exits Artificial Superintelligence Alliance.

What the Move Means for Miners and Bitcoin Fork Watchers

The parties most directly affected are miners who relied on OCEAN to route work to the BIP-110 chain, along with the Roughnecks group that had been mining under that standard. With the pool stepping back, those participants lose the infrastructure that made continued BIP-110 mining straightforward.

For observers tracking fork-chain adoption, the change matters because it signals reduced momentum around a proposal that depended on active miner enforcement to remain relevant. It echoes the pattern seen when a Bitcoin anti-spam fork sputtered to a halt after only two blocks, where limited miner uptake quickly stalled the effort.

Readers watching what comes next should follow whether any remaining operator picks up BIP-110 enforcement and how the redirected hashrate settles back onto the main chain, where difficulty adjustments continuously recalibrate to whatever total hashrate the network's miners ultimately commit.
