The USD/CAD pair is approaching its 20-day exponential moving average (EMA) as of March 14, 2025, driven by renewed trade tensions between the United States and Canada. The loonie has weakened against the greenback following the latest round of tariff threats from Washington, pushing the pair toward a key technical level that traders are watching closely.

Trade Dispute Weighs on Canadian Dollar

The recent escalation in the US-Canada trade dispute has been the primary catalyst for USD/CAD’s upward movement. On March 13, 2025, the US administration announced additional tariffs on Canadian aluminum and lumber products, prompting retaliatory measures from Ottawa. This tit-for-tat escalation has heightened uncertainty for the Canadian economy, which relies heavily on trade with its southern neighbor.

According to data from the US Census Bureau, Canada accounted for approximately 17% of US goods imports in 2024. The new tariffs are expected to impact sectors such as manufacturing and construction, potentially slowing Canada’s economic growth. As a result, market participants have priced in a higher probability of the Bank of Canada (BoC) cutting interest rates later this year, which has put downward pressure on the loonie.

Technical Outlook: 20-Day EMA as Key Resistance

From a technical perspective, the 20-day EMA has emerged as a crucial resistance level for USD/CAD. As of the latest trading session, the pair is trading near 1.3560, with the 20-day EMA sitting at approximately 1.3545. A decisive break above this level could open the door for further gains toward the 50-day EMA at 1.3600, while failure to breach it may lead to a retest of support at 1.3500.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the daily chart is hovering around 55, indicating neutral-to-bullish momentum. Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) has shown a bullish crossover, suggesting that buying interest is building. However, traders remain cautious given the volatile nature of trade-related headlines.

Why This Matters for Forex Traders

For forex traders, the 20-day EMA is often used as a dynamic support or resistance level in trending markets. The current approach to this level reflects the market’s indecision as it weighs the impact of trade tensions against broader risk sentiment. A sustained move above the EMA could signal a short-term bullish trend for USD/CAD, while a rejection might indicate that the pair is range-bound.

Additionally, the upcoming release of Canadian inflation data on March 18, 2025, and the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision on March 19, 2025, are likely to influence the pair’s direction. Any surprise in these events could trigger a breakout from the current consolidation phase.

Conclusion

USD/CAD’s approach to the 20-day EMA underscores the market’s focus on the escalating US-Canada trade dispute. While technical indicators suggest a potential upside breakout, the fundamental backdrop remains uncertain. Traders should monitor key economic data and trade headlines in the coming days to gauge the pair’s next move.

FAQs

Q1: What is the 20-day EMA and why is it important for USD/CAD?
The 20-day exponential moving average (EMA) is a technical indicator that gives more weight to recent price data, providing a smoother line that reflects short-term trends. For USD/CAD, it acts as a dynamic support or resistance level. When the price approaches this level, traders watch for a breakout or rejection, as it often signals a continuation or reversal of the current trend.

Q2: How does the US-Canada trade dispute affect the USD/CAD exchange rate?
The trade dispute affects the exchange rate through its impact on the Canadian economy and the Bank of Canada’s monetary policy. Tariffs reduce trade volumes and can slow economic growth, prompting expectations of lower interest rates, which tend to weaken the Canadian dollar. Conversely, if the dispute is resolved, the loonie may strengthen as uncertainty decreases.

Q3: What are the key levels to watch for USD/CAD in the near term?
Key resistance is at the 20-day EMA around 1.3545, followed by the 50-day EMA at 1.3600. On the downside, support is seen at 1.3500 (psychological level) and the recent low near 1.3450. A break above 1.3600 could signal a more sustained rally, while a drop below 1.3450 would indicate renewed bearish pressure.
