In Robinhood's own words, it's designed to bring traditional markets, crypto, and real-world assets together on a single fast, open network.</p><p>The chain is optimized for tokenized RWAs, meaning things like equities, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), private assets, and other financial instruments represented as tokens that can be traded on-chain. Robinhood's stated vision is a financial system where these assets can be programmatically traded, <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/custody" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">self-custodied</a> by users, and accessed 24/7, rather than being locked to market hours and a single brokerage account.</p><p>It's also worth being clear about what Robinhood Chain isn't. It isn't a token or a coin you buy, and it isn't a closed, Robinhood-only system. It's open infrastructure: Anyone can access the network, move assets across it, or build applications and deploy smart contracts on it, without needing permission from Robinhood or being locked into its app.</p><h2 id="who-built-robinhood-chain-and-why">Who Built Robinhood Chain, and Why?</h2><p>Robinhood Chain was built by Robinhood as part of its push to move financial services onchain, and it was developed on Arbitrum technology in partnership with Offchain Labs. The goal, according to the company, is to democratize access to global financial markets and give users and developers modern <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/blockchain" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">blockchain</a> tools.</p><p>The project was first <a href="https://robinhood.com/us/en/newsroom/robinhood-launches-stock-tokens-reveals-layer-2-blockchain-and-expands-crypto-suite-in-eu-and-us-with-perpetual-futures-and-staking" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">revealed</a> in June 2025 at “Robinhood Presents: To Catch a Token” in Cannes, France. Alongside the launch of US stock and ETF tokens for European customers, Robinhood announced plans for its own layer-2 blockchain, based on Arbitrum (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/arbitrum/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ARB</a>) and optimized for tokenized real-world assets.</p><p>"Our latest offerings lay the groundwork for crypto to become the backbone of the global financial system," said Robinhood chairman and CEO Vlad Tenev at the event.</p><p>A <a href="https://robinhood.com/us/en/newsroom/robinhood-chain-launches-public-testnet" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">public testnet</a> followed in February 2026, giving developers a financial-grade environment to build and test applications ahead of launch, with infrastructure partners including Chainlink, Alchemy, and LayerZero integrating early. Robinhood also committed $1 million toward the 2026 Arbitrum Open House program to encourage developers to build on the chain.</p><p>The <a href="https://robinhood.com/us/en/newsroom/robinhood-accelerates-global-expansion-robinhood-chain-mainnet-stock-tokens-agentic-trading" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">public mainnet</a> then went live on July 1, 2026, announced from London at a keynote titled "Robinhood Presents: The World is Flat."</p><h2 id="how-does-robinhood-chain-work">How Does Robinhood Chain Work?</h2><p>Robinhood Chain works as a layer-2 blockchain that processes transactions off the main Ethereum network and settles them back to it, combining Ethereum's (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/ethereum/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ETH</a>) security with higher throughput and lower costs. It's built using Arbitrum's modular layer-2 framework.</p><p>Because the chain is Ethereum-compatible, developers can use standard Ethereum tools to build on it and deploy smart contracts, and users can add the network to an existing wallet. Robinhood <a href="https://robinhood.com/us/en/chain/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">describes</a> the chain as delivering fast block times of around 100 milliseconds. Out-of-the-box <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/defi" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">decentralized finance (DeFi)</a> building blocks such as lending and borrowing are available from the start.</p><p>The assets at the center of the chain are Stock Tokens, which are standard <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/erc-20" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ERC-20</a> tokens. Each one carries an on-chain Chainlink price feed for real-world asset data, and they can be held or transferred in any compatible wallet. At launch, tokenized stocks trade <a href="https://docs.robinhood.com/chain/building-with-stock-tokens/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">through</a> a request-for-quote (RFQ) model, and they can also be deployed into lending pools or used as collateral across the broader DeFi ecosystem.</p><p>Because they follow familiar token standards, developers can build the same kinds of products around them that they would with any other token, from portfolio displays to indices, yield strategies, and derivatives.</p><h2 id="what-was-robinhood-chain-designed-for">What Was Robinhood Chain Designed For?</h2><p>Robinhood Chain was designed specifically for tokenized real-world assets and the financial services built on top of them. Rather than being a general-purpose blockchain, it's purpose-built to let assets like equities and ETFs live onchain and trade continuously.</p><p>That focus shapes the whole design. The chain is built to support 24/7 trading, <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/bridges" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">bridging</a> between networks, and self-custody, so that a tokenized stock behaves less like an entry in a brokerage ledger and more like a digital asset the holder controls directly. Robinhood has said the chain is meant to underpin its onchain financial services, including the tokenized stocks it began offering to European customers in 2025.</p><p>It was also built for developers. Robinhood positions the chain as a permissionless environment where builders can create financial products such as tokenized asset platforms, lending markets, and <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/perpetual-futures" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">perpetual futures</a> exchanges, using infrastructure and standards they already know.</p><h2 id="how-is-robinhood-chain-being-used">How Is Robinhood Chain Being Used?</h2><p>Robinhood Chain is being used to trade tokenized stocks and to run decentralized finance applications, with a growing ecosystem of partners building on it. At mainnet launch, day-one partners included Uniswap (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/uniswap/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">UNI</a>), which deployed a dedicated <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/automated-market-maker-amm" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">automated market maker (AMM)</a> to serve as a primary public liquidity venue, and Pleiades, which deployed a proprietary AMM for prop trading.</p><p>For end users, the most visible product is Stock Tokens, available through the Robinhood Wallet in more than 120 countries, with more than 200 US stocks and ETFs offered as tokens (availability varies by jurisdiction). These tokens give economic exposure to the underlying shares, including dividend support, and can be traded around the clock.</p><p>Beyond simple trading, Robinhood has connected the chain to products like Robinhood Earn, a decentralized lending product, and perpetual futures through the <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/decentralized-exchange-dex" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">decentralized exchange (DEX)</a> Lighter inside the Robinhood Wallet.</p><p>Analysts at Bernstein <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/07/13/robinhood-chain-surges-into-top-five-by-dex-volume-bernstein" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">noted</a> that within roughly two weeks of launch, Robinhood Chain was handling more than $3 billion in weekly DEX volume, placing it among the top five chains by that measure. However, <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/07/13/robinhood-built-a-blockchain-for-tokenized-stocks-memecoins-took-over" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">memecoin trading</a> drove much of the early volume rather than the tokenized stocks the chain was built for.</p><h2 id="how-is-robinhood-chain-different-from-other-layer-2s">How Is Robinhood Chain Different From Other Layer 2s?</h2><p>Robinhood Chain differs from other layer-2 blockchains in that it's purpose-built for regulated financial assets rather than general-purpose crypto activity. While many L2s aim to be broad platforms for any application, Robinhood Chain is optimized around tokenized real-world assets and is built, in Robinhood's words, to institutional standards.</p><p>The other difference is the company behind it. Robinhood is a publicly traded brokerage serving nearly 28 million customers across dozens of countries, and the chain is natively connected to those users. That pairing of an established brokerage with an open, permissionless network is uncommon among layer 2s. Despite that corporate backing, the chain is permissionless, so builders are not limited to Robinhood's own products.</p><h2 id="final-thoughts">Final Thoughts</h2><p>Robinhood Chain is an Arbitrum-based layer 2 optimized for tokenized assets, with self-custody, round-the-clock trading, and a permissionless environment for developers. It is part of a wider industry effort to move stocks and other real-world assets on-chain, backed in this case by an established brokerage.</p><p>An important caveat is that it's still early. At the time of writing, Stock Tokens are not available in the US or to US persons and face restrictions in several other jurisdictions; early usage has skewed toward speculative trading rather than tokenized equities; and the products and rules around the chain are still evolving.
