Michael Coates has joined the Solana Foundation as its new Chief Information Security Officer, bringing decades of cybersecurity leadership to one of the cryptocurrency industry’s largest blockchain ecosystems. According to Coates, Solana’s expanding role in digital finance and global payments made the opportunity a natural next step in his career.
Coates announced the appointment in a post on X, describing it as a new chapter after holding senior security positions at Mozilla, Twitter, Altitude Networks, and CoinList. He said Solana has reached a stage where stronger cybersecurity has become essential as the network supports larger volumes of financial activity.
His appointment comes as Solana processes tens of billions of dollars in stablecoin transactions every day. According to Coates, the network also records more daily transactions than most blockchain platforms across the cryptocurrency industry, reflecting its growing adoption.
Before joining the foundation, Coates served as Mozilla’s Chief Information Security Officer and later became Twitter’s first CISO. He also founded cloud security company Altitude Networks before CoinList acquired the business, expanding his experience within the digital asset sector.

According to Coates, Solana’s expanding presence in tokenized assets also influenced his decision to join the foundation. He highlighted the launch of SpaceX’s tokenized shares on Solana, noting they became available on the network the same day they debuted on Nasdaq.
He said developments like these demonstrate that blockchain networks are becoming part of modern financial infrastructure. Consequently, stronger cybersecurity measures have become increasingly important as institutional participation expands.
As the foundation’s new security chief, Coates said he will strengthen cybersecurity throughout the Solana ecosystem. Moreover, he plans to improve operational security while promoting stronger application security practices for developers building on the network.

AI and Regulation Take Center Stage

Coates said his responsibilities will also include addressing cybersecurity risks unique to cryptocurrencies and blockchain infrastructure. Besides strengthening technical safeguards, he intends to work with policymakers and standards organizations to help shape cybersecurity regulations affecting the digital asset industry.
Artificial intelligence will remain another major priority under his leadership. According to Coates, attackers are increasingly using AI to improve cyberattack techniques, creating new risks for blockchain platforms and financial technology providers. Consequently, he believes the industry must prepare for AI-driven threats while also using the technology to strengthen cyber defenses.
Earlier this year, Coates testified before the United States Congress about cybersecurity risks associated with artificial intelligence. He said AI will influence both offensive and defensive security strategies as technology advances across multiple industries.

Coates said innovation naturally creates new cybersecurity challenges as blockchain adoption grows. However, he added that stronger security frameworks will help the Solana ecosystem adapt to increasingly sophisticated threats.
According to Coates, his objective is to strengthen protections across the network while supporting Solana’s long-term growth as digital assets, tokenization, and blockchain-based financial services gain wider adoption.
