Samson Mow has reignited the Bitcoin-versus-DeFi security debate by arguing that artificial intelligence will expose vulnerable smart contracts and force decentralized finance to move toward Bitcoin or face collapse.The JAN3 CEO’s latest warning says <a href="https://x.com/JAN3com/status/2062933832714641633" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">AI is going to “obliterate DeFi”</a>, with vulnerable contracts on Ethereum, Solana and other smart-contract networks eventually found, exploited and drained. The statement fits Mow’s long-running Bitcoin-first view, but it is landing at a moment when AI-assisted security research is already changing the threat model across crypto.The argument is not that every DeFi protocol fails immediately. It is that the economics of smart-contract defense become harder when attackers can use AI tools to scan code, test exploit paths and move faster than traditional audit processes. His argument focused on asymmetry. Defenders need to find and fix every serious bug before funds are exposed. Attackers need only one path that works.That view has already become a major talking point in DeFi security circles. Smart contracts are not just static code. They sit inside moving systems of oracles, bridges, liquidation engines, governance permissions, market makers, modules, multisigs and token incentives. AI does not need to invent an exotic new attack every time. That was not a DeFi-specific claim, but it shows why crypto developers are now treating AI-assisted vulnerability discovery as a live security risk rather than a distant concern.<h2 id="zcash-showed-how-fast-ai-can-change-confidence">Zcash Showed How Fast AI Can Change Confidence</h2>The strongest recent crypto example came from privacy coins, not DeFi. Zcash patched a critical Orchard flaw after an AI-assisted review found a vulnerability inside its shielded pool. The incident triggered a market-confidence shock as <a href="https://cryptoadventure.com/zcash-patches-ai-assisted-orchard-flaw-as-zec-dumps-35-and-hayes-exits/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ZEC dumped after the Orchard flaw</a> and traders debated whether years of prior review were enough to protect complex cryptographic systems.That episode matters for Mow’s warning because it showed AI assisting a researcher in finding a flaw inside highly specialized crypto code. The Zcash case did not prove that all smart contracts are unsafe. It did <a href="https://cryptoadventure.com/zcash-bug-hunter-adds-monero-to-audit-queue-after-ai-assisted-orchard-flaw/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">prove that AI can become a serious audit multiplier</a> when guided by a skilled security engineer.DeFi has even more live value exposed through composable contracts. A single integration failure, bridge assumption or privileged module can spread across multiple protocols. The <a href="https://cryptoadventure.com/kelpdao-loses-292-million-in-defi-wallet-drain-across-ethereum-arbitrum/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">KelpDAO drain</a> and later security changes around large cross-chain systems showed how one exploit can force the rest of the ecosystem to rethink trust boundaries.<h2 id="why-bitcoin-benefits-from-the-debate">Why Bitcoin Benefits From The Debate</h2>Bitcoin’s advantage in this narrative is not that it has no programmability. Bitcoin has scripting, multisig, timelocks, Lightning, sidechains and emerging Bitcoin-based finance rails. Its advantage is that the base layer is deliberately narrower than general-purpose smart-contract platforms.That narrower design reduces the number of things the base layer tries to do. It does not remove every risk, especially when Bitcoin is wrapped, bridged, lent, used on sidechains or pushed into yield products. Still, Mow’s point is that the safest long-term settlement asset may be the one with the smallest attack surface and the strongest monetary assurances.That view is gaining attention as more companies build Bitcoin-related products without copying Ethereum’s full DeFi model. Kraken recently launched a <a href="https://cryptoadventure.com/kraken-launches-bitcoin-vault-as-btc-yield-push-moves-into-defi/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin Vault yield product</a>, while Bitcoin-focused builders continue experimenting with custody, Lightning, DLCs, sidechains and BTC-backed lending.The risk is that “move to Bitcoin” can sound cleaner than it is. Bitcoin-based DeFi can still introduce smart contracts, bridges, wrapped assets, custodians, oracle assumptions and liquidation risk. The base asset may be simpler, but the financial products built around it can become complex quickly.Mow’s warning is strongest when read as a security thesis rather than a prediction that every DeFi app disappears. AI is making vulnerability discovery faster. Smart-contract systems are becoming harder to defend. Bitcoin’s conservative design gives it a stronger security narrative in that environment.
