Who Is Carl Runefelt?

Carl Runefelt — widely known online as “The Moon” or “Carl Moon” — is a Swedish cryptocurrency influencer, investor, and entrepreneur born on September 5, 1994, in Sweden. He is 31 years old as of 2026 and based in Dubai, UAE.

Before becoming one of the most recognized names in crypto media, Runefelt worked as a cashier at a grocery store in Sweden. His self-described origin story — from supermarket employee to crypto billionaire — has become one of the most frequently cited examples of Bitcoin’s wealth-creation potential in the influencer community. Crucially, Runefelt has been explicit that his success came not from formal finance education but from self-directed research, a belief in Bitcoin’s long-term thesis, and early action.

Runefelt began investing in Bitcoin in 2017 and launched his YouTube channel “The Moon” the same year. By the end of 2017, he claims to have made his first million through Bitcoin appreciation. His channel grew alongside the 2017 bull market and has remained active through multiple market cycles.

How Did Carl Runefelt Get Rich?

Runefelt’s wealth accumulation story follows a specific sequence: early Bitcoin entry, channel growth that amplified his visibility, and diversification into startup investing and business ventures.

Bitcoin investments (2017–present). Runefelt began buying Bitcoin in 2017 at approximately $4,300. He has consistently stated that Bitcoin is his primary investment and that he holds significant BTC. The 2021 bull market — which took Bitcoin to $69,000 — and its subsequent cycles are the most plausible source of any eight- or nine-figure wealth for a 2017-era Bitcoin accumulator. He also trades futures in Ethereum, Dogecoin, BNB, and Cardano alongside his core Bitcoin position.

YouTube channel “The Moon.” Launched in 2017, the channel focuses on Bitcoin price analysis, crypto market commentary, investment education, and market predictions. With 500,000+ subscribers and millions of total video views, the channel generates significant advertising revenue and has attracted lucrative sponsorship deals from crypto exchanges, hardware wallet companies, and blockchain projects. Runefelt reportedly earned $300,000 in a single month from the channel at its peak in 2021.

The Moon Group. Runefelt founded The Moon Group as the investment arm of his business operations, with a focus on blockchain startups and AI companies. The portfolio reportedly spans 400+ investments in early-stage crypto and Web3 projects. Returns from early-stage crypto investments can be enormous — investments made in 2018–2020 in projects that later performed strongly during the 2021 bull market represent a plausible source of significant wealth.

Affiliate marketing and sponsorships. Runefelt has maintained affiliate relationships with cryptocurrency exchanges, hardware wallets, and trading platforms. Prominent crypto influencer affiliate arrangements can generate $500,000–$1 million+ annually for channels of his size, particularly during bull markets when new user registrations spike.

Kasta payment app. Runefelt was involved in the founding of Kasta — a crypto payment application — alongside other crypto community figures. His role has been variously described as co-founder and investor; Runefelt has publicly stated he is “not the co-founder of Kasta, only an investor.” The KASTA token declined approximately 98% from its January 2022 launch peak through September 2023, which has been cited by critics as a reputational concern.

Formula 2 sponsorship. Runefelt provides $2.5 million annually in sponsorship to a Formula 2 racing team — a marketing investment rather than income source, but one that demonstrates the scale of his operational budget.

Why the estimates are contested. Coinpaper’s February 2026 analysis raised specific questions about the math behind billion-dollar claims. Their analysis noted that if Runefelt began investing $5,000 per month in Bitcoin starting in 2017, his holdings under optimistic assumptions would be worth approximately $3.2 million — far from the billions cited elsewhere. Runefelt himself addressed the discrepancy in an X (Twitter) post, noting sarcastically that a website calculated his net worth as $1, suggesting he finds net worth estimations unreliable. Additionally, early 2026 saw Runefelt publicly describe the crypto market as “functionally in a bear phase” based on content engagement metrics — a characterization consistent with portfolio values being lower than peak 2021 estimates.

The most defensible interpretation of Carl Runefelt’s net worth is: meaningfully wealthy from Bitcoin investments and business income, likely in the range of tens to hundreds of millions of dollars, with the billion-dollar figures representing upper-bound estimates that depend on Bitcoin holdings that have not been publicly verified.

How Does Carl Runefelt Make Money?

Runefelt’s income streams in 2026 are diverse, spanning passive Bitcoin appreciation, active content creation, and business operations:

YouTube ad revenue: At 500,000+ subscribers with consistent upload frequency, the channel generates an estimated $500,000–$1 million annually in ad revenue during active market periods, with significantly lower revenue during bear markets.

Sponsorships: Crypto exchanges and service providers pay top-tier crypto YouTubers $50,000–$200,000 per sponsored video. At Runefelt’s channel size, annual sponsorship income during bull markets has been estimated at $1–$3 million.

The Moon Group investment returns: Early-stage crypto startup investments can generate 10–100x returns in favorable market conditions. Portfolio income from 400+ investments varies significantly by cycle.

Paid educational content: Runefelt offers paid memberships, courses, and trading communities through The Moon platform.

Public speaking: Runefelt speaks at blockchain conferences globally — a paid activity that typically generates $10,000–$50,000 per appearance for influencers of his profile.

Consulting: Crypto projects seek Runefelt’s brand association and strategic input for launch strategies, tokenomics advice, and community growth.

Carl Runefelt and Bitcoin: His Investment Philosophy

Runefelt’s public investment philosophy centers entirely on Bitcoin as a long-term store of value. He has consistently argued that Bitcoin will eventually reach $500,000–$1,000,000 per coin, citing the stock-to-flow model and the reduction in new supply through successive halving events. As of early 2026, he described the current market as in a “bear phase” based on engagement metrics, but maintained his long-term bullish thesis.

He publishes regular Bitcoin price analysis on YouTube and Twitter, often using technical analysis frameworks including support/resistance levels, moving averages, and RSI to generate short-term predictions. His predictions have attracted both loyal followers who credit him with profitable trades and critics who argue that his prediction accuracy — like most crypto YouTubers — regresses to chance over time.

His CryptoPunk NFT purchase (approximately $1 million) represents his most publicly documented NFT investment. He has been critical of what he calls “low-quality” crypto projects and scams, though his involvement with Kasta — which declined 98% — has complicated this framing for some observers.

Carl Runefelt: Controversies

Kasta connection. Runefelt’s association with the Kasta payment token — which declined 98% after launch — generated sustained criticism. His public clarification that he was “only an investor, not a co-founder” came over a year after the original publication of articles describing him as a founding figure, which critics characterized as post-hoc distancing.

Net worth claims. The gap between claimed billion-dollar net worth and what can be mathematically verified from publicly known Bitcoin purchase timing has led skeptics to question the figures. Runefelt’s own X post noting that a website calculated his net worth at $1 suggests he is aware of the skepticism and treats it with irony.

Prediction track record. Like most crypto influencers, Runefelt’s price predictions have a mixed track record. Critics maintain that YouTube title editing to align past predictions with outcomes has occurred; Runefelt has called these characterizations unfair and compared critics to flat-earthers.

These controversies are presented here for informational completeness. They are part of the publicly documented record surrounding Runefelt’s career.

Carl Runefelt Lifestyle

Based in Dubai — a popular destination for crypto-wealthy individuals given its favorable tax treatment — Runefelt documents a lifestyle consistent with high net worth: luxury cars, high-end real estate, international travel to blockchain conferences and Formula 2 events. His Instagram (280,000 followers) provides the most lifestyle-focused content. Dubai’s zero income tax and growing crypto regulatory infrastructure make it a practical base for someone whose income derives from digital asset appreciation and global content monetization.
