Big trucks are getting smarter. That’s the good news. The bad news is that safety technology remains inconsistent across the trucking industry, and federal rules take time to catch up. Some features exist; others are still being debated.&nbsp;Please keep reading to find out more about truck accidents, efforts to improve safety, and what to do if you’re seriously injured in a collision with a truck.The Status of Three Important Truck Safety FeaturesAutomatic Emergency Braking – Under Proposal Federal regulators are working toward a rule that would require automatic emergency braking on heavy trucks. This technology detects vehicles ahead and applies the brakes when a driver doesn’t respond in time. The AEB system can prevent some crashes and reduce the severity of others. This technology is available now.The original proposal came out in 2023. Since then, the Department of Transportation (DOT) announced plans to move forward with a revised version.&nbsp;Progress in adopting this technology has been slow for several reasons:<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Regulators must balance safety goals with transportation industry concerns about cost&nbsp;</li><li>Questions about real-world performance, since it hasn’t been widely put into use yet</li><li>Figuring out long-term maintenance of the system</li></ul>Speed Control – Scrapped In July of 2025, the DOT withdrew a proposal that would’ve required speed-limiting devices on heavy trucks over 26,000 pounds. The reason given was a need for more data and analysis before moving forward.&nbsp;Transportation company pushback also played a role. Drivers on tight deadlines are the norm. Requiring drivers to stay below a certain speed limit would impact how the industry operates. Nonetheless, it’s unfortunate that this initiative didn’t move forward since speed is a common factor in serious truck accidents. &nbsp;Underride Protection&nbsp;–&nbsp;Partially AdoptedUnderride crashes occur when a smaller vehicle slides under the back or side of a trailer. This is one of the deadliest types of truck accidents. There has been partial progress on underride protection. Federal standards for rear underride guards on trailers and semitrailers have been updated. Side underride protection measures, however, are still under review.&nbsp;Current Truck Safety FeaturesCertain truck safety features are already in use nationally.Electronic stability control&nbsp;is now required on many heavy trucks. It uses sensors and automatic braking to help prevent rollovers and loss of control, especially during sharp turns or sudden maneuvers.Electronic logging devices&nbsp;are also standard. These systems track driving time and rest periods for drivers who are required to keep hours of service logs. The rule was finalized in 2015 and is now part of daily operations for many carriers.These measures matter. They improve oversight and reduce certain kinds of major truck crashes. However, they don’t directly address truck rear-end collisions.
