The idea that Ethereum (ETH) could overtake Bitcoin (BTC) in market capitalization is a theory that has fascinated crypto fans for years. Known as the flippening, this hypothetical event would turn the market on its head, but is it even possible?

Newcomers might believe that Bitcoin and Ethereum are basically the same thing with different names. There are certainly some major similarities, as they both live on the blockchain and both can be sent to other people’s wallets or swapped for different tokens on exchanges.
Yet, there are crucial differences. Bitcoin was designed to act as a fast, secure alternative to physical cash before becoming widely accepted as a store of value with programmed scarcity. Ethereum is used in smart contracts and decentralized apps, as a sort of foundation token for Web3 that can carry out many processes.
To better understand the way they work, we can look at how they and other cryptos can be used to make payments and other transactions.

Let’s take crypto payments in online casinos as an everyday transaction example. The payments section at the SlotsLV casino confirms that BTC and ETH are both accepted as banking methods. Other cryptos are also accepted, with Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), and Tether (USDT) among the names that are listed here. This lets us see that all accepted cryptos can be used in the same way, by sending tokens from one wallet to another directly across the blockchain. SlotsLV accepts many kinds of coins to bump up the convenience factor for its players, providing them with choice.
This peer-to-peer aspect is one of the vital elements of all digital currencies. It means that they can be used by casinos – and other sites – to add a greater degree of security and privacy. If you want to just play some slots and table games safely, you can do this without moving funds from your main bank account or card. The type of crypto you send to the casino doesn’t make any difference to the games you can play or your chances of winning, which are completely random at all times.
This casino allows players to aim for jackpots using cryptos, with this video taking an amusing look at how people react to hitting the biggest prizes on slots.

The BTC Advantages

The next step is to consider what advantages keep Bitcoin ahead of ETH and have so far meant that the flippening hasn’t happened. First-mover advantage is a phrase you might have seen associated with BTC. Having a longer track record and greater brand recognition is certainly important. This summary of first-mover advantage from ProductPlan points out the continued success of Amazon and eBay, but suggests that being first on the market isn’t always a guarantee of success.
Scarcity is a far more important concept for the future of BTC. With a total of 21 million coins that can be mined, this cryptocurrency’s scarcity has seen it compared to gold from the start. With cloud mining now gaining popularity, the demand for new tokens is growing. Mining BTC becomes more difficult over time, and the vast majority of these coins have already been mined.
On the other hand, ETH doesn’t have a fixed supply. It’s currently classed as scarce or deflationary because of high network usage, but the lack of a maximum supply makes it more difficult to imagine the flippening happening.
The truth is that the retail and corporate world have both started to see BTC as a valuable, scarce asset in a way that ETH hasn’t yet managed. Aggressive buying strategies from Strategy, El Salvador, and others have highlighted the high level of faith that many people have in Bitcoin’s future as a commodity.

The ETH Outlook

We should start by looking at the fact that Ethereum simply has a different reason to exist than Bitcoin. ETH is sometimes called digital oil when compared to the digital gold aspect of BTC. This is because the Ethereum network is the basis for a vast array of decentralized internet activities. It covers a massive range of areas, from decentralized finance (DeFi) to stablecoins, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and decentralized applications (dApps), leading to some people calling it a world computer.
This immense scope perhaps makes it more complicated for most people to fully understand, compared to the simplicity of Bitcoin. However, institutional adoption has ramped up in the form of ETH ETFs and treasury companies like BitMine (BMNR), SharpLink Gaming, and The Ether Machine. Unlike with BTC treasury companies, these firms can stake their ETH or use it in Defi apps to earn profits from the tokens they hold.
At the moment, the market cap of Ethereum is still significantly lower than Bitcoin, and it’s highly unlikely that the flippening will happen any time soon. Ultimately, it’s a battle between two very different assets that are used for different purposes. By understanding the differences, we can see how they appeal for varying reasons.
Both cryptocurrencies have firmly established themselves as the leaders in this industry, far ahead of rivals like Tether (USDT), XRP (XRP), and BNB (BNB). The volatility of crypto prices means that big changes can happen suddenly, but for the moment, it’s difficult to see Bitcoin losing its prized position at the top of the tree.
