Harvard University increased its investment in BlackRock's Bitcoin exchange-traded fund by more than 250 percent during the third quarter of 2025. According to Cointelegraph, Harvard Management Company now holds 6.8 million shares of the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF valued at $442.8 million as of September 30. The university first entered this position in the second quarter of 2025 with approximately 1.9 million shares worth $116.6 million.
The regulatory filing submitted Friday shows IBIT became Harvard's largest investment among its publicly disclosed holdings. CoinDesk reports the Bitcoin ETF position accounts for just over 20 percent of Harvard's reported U.S.-listed public equity holdings. The $57 billion endowment fund's Bitcoin investment represents less than 1 percent of its total assets. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas noted the investment ranks Harvard as the 16th-largest holder of IBIT and called it the fund's biggest position increase in the third quarter.
Harvard also expanded its gold holdings during the same period. The endowment nearly doubled its position in SPDR Gold Shares to 661,391 shares worth $235.1 million. The university maintained large investments in major technology companies including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Alphabet during the quarter.
Breaking Traditional Investment Patterns
University endowments typically avoid exchange-traded funds in favor of private equity and direct investments. Balchunas described Harvard's IBIT purchase as "super rare" for an endowment of this size. We reported in August that Harvard's initial $116 million Bitcoin ETF investment represented approximately 0.2 percent of the total endowment value. The fund accumulated over $86 billion in assets within 18 months of launch and generated more annual revenue than BlackRock's S&P 500 ETF despite being nine times smaller.
Harvard joins a small group of academic institutions adding cryptocurrency exposure to their portfolios. Brown University purchased $4.9 million of IBIT shares during the second quarter. Emory University expanded its Bitcoin ETF holdings by 91 percent in the third quarter to over one million shares worth $42.9 million. These allocations remain small fractions of total endowment assets but represent a departure from traditional conservative investment strategies.
The timing of Harvard's increased allocation coincides with Bitcoin price volatility. Bitcoin fell below $95,000 after reaching a low of $93,029 in a 24-hour period. Bitcoin ETFs experienced net outflows of $1.11 billion in the trading week ending Friday. The price decline temporarily removed gains made earlier in 2025.
Institutional Adoption Reaches Critical Mass
Harvard's expanded position reflects broader institutional acceptance of Bitcoin as a portfolio component. AInvest found institutional investors held $33.6 billion in Bitcoin ETF assets during the second quarter of 2025. This represented a 3 percentage point increase from the first quarter. Sovereign wealth funds including Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Company expanded holdings to $681 million by mid-2025.
The Securities and Exchange Commission's approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in early 2024 removed operational barriers for conservative investors. University endowments and pension funds previously avoided cryptocurrency due to custody complexity and regulatory uncertainty. The regulated ETF structure provides familiar investment vehicles that meet institutional compliance requirements. State pension funds from Michigan to Florida now hold Bitcoin exposure through spot ETFs or related instruments.
Critics maintain concerns about Bitcoin's volatility and suitability for long-term institutional portfolios. Finance professor David Krause at Marquette University described Bitcoin as the most volatile asset class he has observed. Supporters counter that modest allocations of 1 to 2 percent add portfolio risk comparable to exposure in major technology stocks. The growing number of endowment investments suggests institutional committees are becoming comfortable with small Bitcoin positions as alternative assets.
BlackRock's IBIT dominates the Bitcoin ETF market with nearly $75 billion in net assets. The fund captured 61.4 percent market share among U.S. Bitcoin ETFs. Harvard's investment decision validates the product's position among institutional investors. Whether other elite endowments follow Harvard's lead will determine if this represents an isolated case or the start of broader university adoption of cryptocurrency investments.
