The stock market opened Thursday on shaky ground after Meta and Microsoft released disappointing earnings. Investors had been bracing for a turbulent session, and they got one. Meta’s stock plunged nearly 8%, while Microsoft slipped around 3%. Both tech giants reported solid revenue, but investors were more concerned about what lay beneath the surface. Microsoft’s $3.1 billion hit from its OpenAI investment worried many that artificial intelligence spending may be growing faster than returns.

Meta, meanwhile, revealed its strongest revenue growth since early 2024 but was weighed down by a $15.9 billion one-time charge linked to President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The charge raised questions about future cash flow. Together, these reports dragged on the broader market, pushing futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq lower. The contrast with Alphabet’s 7% surge after strong results only sharpened investor anxiety. The market’s message was clear: even the tech titans are not immune to the new era of scrutiny.

Markets briefly found relief after President Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. The two leaders announced a limited trade truce designed to reset relations between Washington and Beijing. Trump agreed to halve tariffs on fentanyl-related imports from China, reducing the overall average levy on Chinese goods from 57% to about 47%. In exchange, China pledged to delay its planned restrictions on rare earth mineral exports for one year. These materials are vital for electronics, electric vehicles, and defense industries — areas where the U.S. and China fiercely compete.

The deal also included China’s commitment to resume buying American soybeans and agricultural products, a move seen as a boost for U.S. farmers. Investors cheered the temporary stability, with U.S.-listed rare earth miners like MP Materials jumping more than 3%. Still, analysts warned that the détente might not last. As Capital Economics noted, the agreement removes an immediate threat to the market but does not solve deeper tensions. Both nations continue to decouple in technology and supply chains.

Stock Market Volatility Returns as Investors Eye Fed Policy

Despite the trade truce, uncertainty returned quickly to the stock market. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell unsettled investors by warning that another rate cut in December was “not a foregone conclusion.” The Fed had just trimmed rates by a quarter of a percentage point, but Powell’s cautious tone suggested the central bank is divided. Stocks briefly rallied before fading again. The Dow gave up early gains to finish slightly lower, while the S&P 500 ended flat.

October’s reputation as a volatile month has proven true again. Traders are balancing optimism from Trump’s diplomacy with worries about slower global growth and uneven earnings. Tech stocks remain the main driver of sentiment, and any weakness from companies like Microsoft or Meta quickly ripples through the indexes. Many analysts believe these swings could create buying opportunities. As CFRA’s Sam Stovall said, “If AI-driven productivity ramps up faster than expected, the Fed might have to cut more than it wants to.”

China’s influence on the global market is as powerful as ever. By controlling around 90% of the world’s rare earth mineral processing, Beijing holds leverage that investors cannot ignore. Its decision to pause export restrictions for a year gave short-term relief, but uncertainty lingers beyond that. Markets also reacted to Trump’s claim that China will discuss semiconductor access with Nvidia, though no concrete deal emerged. That left traders cautious about the future of chip exports — a critical issue for tech stocks.

At the same time, China’s renewed purchases of U.S. soybeans offered a rare positive headline. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins confirmed multiple shipments were already on the way. Trump called the talks “highly productive,” but he admitted that a full agreement on broader trade issues remains unfinished. For now, the temporary truce has cooled tensions enough to calm markets — but only slightly. Analysts say the fragile peace could easily crack if either side missteps.

The Market Looks Ahead: Can Stability Hold?

The combination of weak Big Tech earnings and delicate U.S.–China diplomacy has left investors uncertain. Markets crave clarity, yet both Microsoft’s AI spending and Meta’s costly tax charge have raised new questions. Meanwhile, Trump’s trade truce with China may help the stock market avoid a sharp correction, but it does not resolve the deeper economic rivalry between the two powers.

Looking ahead, traders will focus on how quickly AI investments deliver profits and whether the Federal Reserve signals any shift in its December outlook. The market’s mood remains fragile. Every new headline — from a tariff adjustment to a tech earnings report — seems capable of swinging sentiment. Still, there’s a growing belief that volatility could offer opportunities for savvy investors. In this uneasy balance between innovation, politics, and global trade, one thing is clear: the stock market is entering a new phase where technology and diplomacy now move hand in hand.
