Ian Calderon, a former California Assemblymember and proponent of Bitcoin, has officially announced his candidacy for California governor in the 2026 election. Entering a competitive field of candidates vying to replace Gavin Newsom, Calderon positions himself as a fresh, innovative voice in the political landscape.

On Tuesday, Calderon confirmed his gubernatorial bid via social media platform X, highlighting key campaign promises centered on making homes, groceries, and gas more affordable for Californians. Emphasizing his Bitcoin support, he connects with voters who align with progressive technology and financial solutions.

Calderon stated, My generation handles finances digitally—we pay bills on our phones, send money with apps like Venmo, and invest in Bitcoin. However, current government approaches rely on outdated ideas, failing to address today’s challenges effectively.

In a separate post, Calderon reinforced his commitment to technological leadership, saying California should reclaim its reputation as a technology pioneer and lead in Bitcoin adoption nationwide.

Following significant contributions from the crypto lobby during the 2024 elections, lawmakers across federal and state levels are increasingly advocating for crypto-friendly policies. Calderon’s platform aligns with this trend.

Beginning his political career in 2012 as the youngest member of the California legislature at age 27, Calderon served until 2020. He notably led California’s Blockchain Working Group, contributing to the foundation of the state’s blockchain roadmap.

California, the most populous U.S. state with a $4.3 trillion economy, is progressing crypto-related legislation. Recently, a bill passed to allow state agencies to accept cryptocurrency payments, though efforts toward establishing a state Bitcoin reserve have been less advanced.

During a livestream on X, Calderon expressed his vision for California to hold Bitcoin on its balance sheet. He promised, “Once I’m governor, I will ensure Bitcoin is part of the state’s assets.” Furthermore, he plans to promote using Bitcoin to fund state programs.

The gubernatorial election in California is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Calderon faces stiff competition from several well-established candidates. The race intensified after former Vice President Kamala Harris announced she would not run.

Current polls show former Democratic Congresswoman Katie Porter leading, followed by Republican candidates Sheriff Chad Bianco and political adviser Steve Hilton.

Since stepping back from political office, Calderon has collaborated with Satoshi Action Fund CEO Dennis Porter to propose a bill exploring Bitcoin as legal tender in California, introduced in early 2022. However, this proposal has seen limited progress since its introduction.
