The world is swiftly transitioning away from traditional economic frameworks towards an internet-first economy, powered by blockchain, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms.
Balaji Srinivasan, a venture capitalist and former Coinbase executive, highlights this shift as advanced countries embrace technology-driven commerce. He explains that legacy economies are gradually being phased out in favor of thriving internet-based systems.
Srinivasan shared data contrasting the meteoric growth of the “Magnificent Seven” tech giants—including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Nvidia, and Tesla—with the stagnant performance of other companies in the S&P 500 since 2005.
The S&P 500 is a key economic benchmark comprising the 500 largest U.S. companies by market capitalization. Srinivasan notes, “Since the 2008 financial crisis, every transaction and communication has moved online. We’re just beginning; the future lies in internet-centric economies, communities, cities, and governance structures.”
These leading tech companies dominate the current financial landscape, reflecting the rapid adoption of digital technology in business and daily life.
Srinivasan also introduced the concept of ‘Network States’—digitally distributed communities that could rival nation-states. Such entities would leverage internet-native cryptocurrencies, marking a revolutionary shift comparable to the Industrial Revolution’s transformation from agriculture to manufacturing economies.

Traditional financial systems and governments often lag in embracing innovation, sometimes hindering technological progress. However, regulators in the United States are now advocating for integrating blockchain and artificial intelligence to modernize finance.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued a joint statement in September outlining plans for 24/7 capital markets to align traditional finance with the nonstop nature of cryptocurrency trading.
Furthermore, the government has enlisted blockchain oracle providers like Pyth Network and Chainlink to publish economic data on-chain, promoting transparency and public accountability.
