Ronin, developed by Sky Mavis, is moving to a full Ethereum Layer-2, shifting from its standalone sidechain setup. This transition, using the OP Stack and Arbitrum Orbit, is planned for completion between Q1 and Q2 2026.
The transition involves Sky Mavis team and Tomasz Stańczak under Ethereum Foundation, collaborating with Arbitrum to develop Ronin's Layer-2 as an Orbit chain. The initiative aims to enhance security and scalability.

Institutional Validators Join Ronin for Enhanced Security

Significant changes include a new Proof of Distribution model for rewards, emphasizing builder activity. Institutional validators like Coinbase and Compound increase network security, demonstrating strong confidence in this strategic shift. "Institutional heavyweights, including Coinbase and Compound, are stepping up as validators. This collaboration not only boosts security and liquidity but signals a resounding vote of confidence in Ethereum’s scalability prospects." - Blockworks
Financial impacts include transitioning $450 million in total value locked (TVL) from Ronin to Layer-2, affecting rewards and incentives. Historical trends indicate similar transitions enhancing scalability and security, benefiting the broader Web3 ecosystem.
