Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum , has invited researchers to participate in the Poseidon cryptographic analysis program aimed at improving the network’s efficiency. He emphasized the importance of examining the security features of a new hash function that could be utilized on the Ethereum <a href="https://en.coin-turk.com/linea-launch-the-power-of-ethereum-scaling-and-zk-rollup-technology/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">blockchain</a>.

Buterin indicated that the Poseidon function could enhance zk-prover efficiency. This move, linked to Ethereum’s efforts to advance scalability and privacy, highlights the necessity for researchers to conduct detailed examinations of security features.
<blockquote>
 Vitalik Buterin: “More information about security features holds high value.”
</blockquote>
Poseidon offers an algebraic structure utilizing addition and multiplication operations over finite fields instead of traditional bit operations. This function is specifically optimized for zero-knowledge proof systems, holding potential for increased efficiency in systems such as SNARKs, STARKs, and Bulletproofs. A thorough analysis of the selected method is anticipated to strengthen the technological infrastructure.

Diverse opinions regarding the Poseidon hash function have emerged within the community. Ye Zhang, a notable figure in blockchain technology and cryptography, expressed concerns about significant limitations during this transition. He particularly pointed out the function’s dependence on certain prime fields and the risks of performance slowdowns.
<blockquote>
 Ye Zhang: “Poseidon’s dependency on specific prime fields may restrict flexibility and lead to performance issues.”
</blockquote>
Buterin stressed the need for extensive research before potential updates, aiming for balanced progress between security, efficiency, and compatibility for Ethereum. The research will be conducted within an extended program framework until March 15.
This strategic step by Ethereum is evaluated in line with efforts to enhance technological infrastructure. As the new approach progresses amidst various opinions and critiques, decisions will be based on comprehensive analyses.
The developments are pivotal in shaping Ethereum’s future application areas and compliance processes, making it crucial to assess different technical alternatives as research advances.
