Four projects – Lightning, Stacks, Liquid, and Rootstock – currently dominate the emerging layer-2 market on Bitcoin.</p> 
<p>Besides speeding up payments, they will gradually introduce more advanced features such as smart contracts. For instance, the “Nakamoto” update of <a href="https://www.cointribune.com/en/crypto-solana-stacks-and-near-boosted-by-the-hype-should-we-fear-a-crash/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stacks</a> will soon enable BTC transfers in just 5 seconds, compared to the current 10 to 30 minutes.</p> 
<p>Among the promising initiatives, Ark is an off-chain payment protocol with very low costs, and MintLayer is a sidechain dedicated to DeFi activities.</p> 
<p>Thanks to these cutting-edge technologies, Bitcoin could thus catch up in terms of features and scalability while retaining the qualities of decentralization and security that have made it successful.</p> 
<h2 id="h-a-cultural-renaissance-comparable-to-ethereum">A cultural renaissance comparable to Ethereum</h2> 
<p>Everything suggests that we are witnessing a cultural renaissance comparable to what we’ve seen with Ethereum. Last year’s advent of <a href="https://www.cointribune.com/en/ordinals-summary-of-the-raging-debate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ordinals</a> and BRC-20 tokens on Bitcoin seems to have been the starting signal.</p> 
<p>If layer-2 solutions can effectively bridge the current gaps in the network, in terms of speed, costs, and features, it could fully unlock Bitcoin’s potential. And stimulate the emergence of new use cases, thus accelerating its mainstream adoption.</p> 
<p>Just like the recent rush for <a href="https://www.cointribune.com/en/etf-bitcoin-volumes-are-gigantic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bitcoin Spot ETFs</a> in the USA, layer-2 networks could become powerful growth drivers in the years to come. It remains for developers to refine these cutting-edge technologies to avoid the pitfalls of the original network.</p>
