The crypto market had a poor showing in August, with Bitcoin starting the month just under the $30K mark and tumbling all the way down to the $25K level. The top altcoins did not fare any better, with Ethereum depreciating over 11% and XRP crashing close to 30%.&nbsp; 
While the top cryptocurrencies have mostly traded sideways at the start of September, they continue to have a bearish market structure. The total crypto market cap is in the red again today, close to breaking below $1 trillion, and Bitcoin below $500 billion. 
This article predicts the potential price action of Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP in September, while also looking at two alternate tokens that may outperform the bear market.&nbsp; 
<h2 id="strong-will-bitcoin-face-another-rektember-scenario-strong">Will Bitcoin Face Another “Rektember” Scenario?</h2> 
September has traditionally not been a good month for the largest cryptocurrency, with popular crypto analysts like <a href="https://twitter.com/CryptoJelleNL/status/1696054006102003811?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">@CryptoJelleNL</a> referring to it as “Rektember”.&nbsp; 
BTC has seen significant losses in this month each of the last 5 years and experts believe that this year may see a repeat of the similar story.

In 2022 for example, Bitcoin had negative returns in the month of September, and also did even during the last crypto bull run in 2020 - 2021. BTC continues to face a significant liquidity crunch due to the lack of any bullish catalyst in the market. It quickly retraced its entire Grayscale pump after the SEC delayed all pending <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2023/08/31/after-grayscale-victory-sec-kicks-the-can-on-latest-bitcoin-etf-applications/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">spot ETF applications</a>, including BlackRock’s.

Popular trader @DrProfitCrypto, who has close to 200K followers on Twitter and is bullish on Bitcoin in the long term, reveals that the token needs to sweep and <a href="https://twitter.com/DrProfitCrypto/status/1698677563260842355?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">reclaim the $23.5K lows</a> to see any sustainable upside.&nbsp; 
Another analyst <a href="https://twitter.com/EmperorBTC/status/1698709470199587254?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">@EmperorBTC</a>, who has over 350K followers on Twitter, agrees with this sentiment and believes that BTC would need to hit the $23K mark for fresh liquidity and long-term accumulation.&nbsp; 
@CryptoTony_ is even more bearish on Bitcoin and expects the accumulation phase to last until <a href="https://twitter.com/CryptoTony__/status/1698977013971698025?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BTC hits the $20K mark</a> after which it could gather momentum.&nbsp; 
With BTC once again falling below its 200-week EMA, the short positions against it are ramping up, with close to $40 million worth of shorts on Binance alone.&nbsp; 
<h2 id="strong-could-ethereum-rally-despite-btc-struggles-strong">Could Ethereum Rally Despite BTC Struggles?</h2> 
Ethereum is facing some of the same struggles as BTC - a lack of fresh capital due to the delay in the ETFs and a hawkish Federal Reserve.&nbsp;

However, trader @crypto_rand, who has over 300K followers on Twitter, believes that the continued decline in BTC dominance could provide an opportunity for an <a href="https://twitter.com/crypto_rand/status/1698649854799736937?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ETH bear rally in September</a>.&nbsp; 
Outside of a few short-term pumps, Bitcoin’s dominance has seen a <a href="https://twitter.com/xrp_prime/status/1697628853114478637?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">weekly downtrend since June</a>.

Analyst <a href="https://twitter.com/CryptoTony__/status/1698399273400873412?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">@CryptoTony_</a>, who has over 335K followers on X, believes that the Ethereum price will see a correction to $1400 before any potential upside. However, he predicts that if the second largest cryptocurrency manages to breach the $1640 trend line, it could offer a potential long entry point.&nbsp; 
The Ethereum network is also showing some resilience - on-chain data firm Santiment reveals that the network has exceeded 467K unique address interactions in a single day. An <a href="https://twitter.com/santimentfeed/status/1698403573485486392?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">upward trend in ETH’s utility</a> could result in an appreciation of its value.&nbsp; 
Ethereum also received some support from U.S. courts as Judge Polk Failla of the Southern District of New York called <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2023/08/31/us-court-calls-eth-a-commodity-while-tossing-investor-suit-against-uniswap/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum a commodity</a>. The security vs. commodity debate has become one of the overarching narratives of the crypto market, with SEC chairman Gary Gensler refusing to give ETH a “non-security status”.&nbsp; 
Judge Failla also oversees the SEC's lawsuit against Coinbase and her opinion on Ethereum may carry significant weight in the minds of investors.&nbsp; 
<h2 id="strong-xrp-technical-analysis-gives-it-a-sell-signal-strong">XRP Technical Analysis Gives It A Sell Signal</h2> 
Ripple scored a landmark victory against the US Securities and Exchange Commission when District Judge Analisa Torres ruled that the programmatic and individual sales of <a href="https://www.google.co.in/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiH7fqEnZOBAxVpbmwGHesyCVwQFnoECB0QAQ&amp;url=https://www.investopedia.com/what-does-the-xrp-not-a-security-ruling-mean-for-other-cryptocurrencies-7561320&amp;usg=AOvVaw1lZjVxgIzxD0BGfrgV2PSo&amp;opi=89978449" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP did not violate the Securities Act</a>.&nbsp; 
The ruling conferred a non-security status to the token, resulting in it trading as high as $0.85.&nbsp;

To make matters worse, noted securities law expert Judge Jed Rakoff rejected Torres’ Howey analysis, which actually became the basis for the SEC’s appeal.&nbsp;

The long-term prospect for XRP depends upon the outcome of this case - however, its short-term outlook also appears to be gloomy. The token is currently underperforming every important moving average indicator in the daily time frame and is on the cusp of falling below the crucial 20-month SMA.&nbsp;
