US producer inflation surged to 6.3% annually in September, significantly exceeding Wall Street expectations of 5.4% and delivering another warning that inflationary pressure is accelerating across the American economy.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 1.3% month over month, its largest increase since March 2022. Core producer inflation, excluding food and energy, reached 5.0% annually against expectations of 4.4%, adding to concerns that the Federal Reserve may need to raise interest rates again.
The report arrives just one day after US CPI inflation accelerated to 3.7%, creating two consecutive inflation surprises ahead of the Fed's October 27–28 policy meeting.US Producer Inflation Hits 6.3% as Energy Costs Surge
According to the latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, producer prices increased 1.3% in September, more than double the approximately 0.6% monthly increase economists anticipated.
The annual headline rate accelerated from a revised 5.6% in August to 6.3%, reaching its highest level since December 2022.

Energy was the primary driver of the increase. Producer energy prices jumped 10.8% during September, while gasoline prices surged 20.3%, accounting for nearly half of the monthly increase in final-demand goods prices.
Food prices also climbed 1.2%, reversing August's decline and adding pressure to businesses already facing higher transportation and operating costs.
These developments reflect the broader oil-driven inflation concerns that have intensified as energy-market disruptions continue affecting global supply chains. Will the Federal Reserve Raise Interest Rates Again?
September's producer inflation report complicates the Federal Reserve's effort to control price pressures without excessively weakening economic activity.
The central bank raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points in September, bringing the federal funds target range to 3.75%-4.00%.
However, the latest inflation figures suggest monetary tightening has not yet brought price growth under control.
Investors had already increased expectations for further tightening following Wednesday's CPI release. Coinpaper reported that Fed hike odds climbed sharply as higher gasoline costs pushed consumer inflation above forecasts.
Following Thursday's PPI report, LSEG data indicated that markets were assigning approximately a 29% probability to an October rate increase. The reading shows that a hike is possible, although traders still consider an unchanged policy rate more likely at the upcoming meeting.
An important distinction is that the Fed officially targets inflation using the Personal Consumption Expenditures index rather than CPI or PPI. Nevertheless, producer prices can influence future consumer inflation and components of the PCE measure.Bitcoin and US Stocks Face Renewed Inflation Pressure
Financial markets remain under pressure as investors assess the prospect of borrowing costs staying elevated for longer.
Bitcoin traded around $80,700 on October 15 after briefly falling toward $80,247 overnight. Higher interest rates generally increase the appeal of yield-bearing assets while reducing demand for speculative investments.
This reverses some of the optimism seen earlier in October, when weak employment data helped reduce expectations for another Fed rate increase.
US stock futures also weakened, with Nasdaq-100 futures declining approximately 1.3% as technology shares faced additional pressure from concerns over artificial intelligence spending.
The contrast with late September is notable.
