Shiba Inu (SHIB), a widely followed meme coin within the cryptocurrency sector, recently gained attention after its official X account reacted to analyses of its long-term price potential, particularly the frequently debated $1 price target. SHIB’s high volatility, as compared to larger altcoins like Solana (SOL) and Ethereum (ETH), continues to fuel market speculation and investor debate.

Market comparisons and analyst take

Several days ago, a comparative analysis of top cryptocurrencies included SHIB and described it as a “high-beta asset,” meaning it typically exhibits greater price swings in reaction to market movements than more established cryptocurrencies. The analyst involved characterized SHIB as trading far below what some consider its “potential,” but also pointed out that reaching a $1 price tag faces significant hurdles due to SHIB’s enormous circulating supply of 589 trillion tokens.

According to the analysis, “Shiba Inu (SHIB) acts as a high-beta asset, trading well below potential, but faces a mathematically improbable—though not impossible—path to $1 due to its supply.”

The Shiba Inu team shared this assessment on its X account, describing the analysis as “nice work.” They acknowledged the optimism around SHIB but cautioned about the price levels cited in some graphics, noting that the $0.000012 value attributed to SHIB in a popular comparison resource does not reflect the token’s current 2026 levels.

Token supply and price implications

The most significant obstacle to SHIB reaching $1 lies in its sheer circulating supply. If each SHIB token reached a value of $1, the total market capitalization would approach $589 trillion—a figure that far surpasses the size of any existing financial market. This calculation is a straightforward product of price and circulating supply, rather than an indication of capital required for such a valuation.

SHIB’s supply has already seen a notable reduction from its initial 999 trillion tokens. The decrease is primarily thanks to community-led burn programs, which aim to remove tokens from circulation by sending them to inaccessible wallets.

Currently, over 41% of SHIB’s total supply has been burned, although burn rates remain modest relative to the total. In the past week, SHIB’s community burns increased the weekly burn rate by 190.45%, but the quantities burned are still measured in the millions, rather than billions, of tokens.

Supporters anticipate that further integration of Shibarium, a Layer-2 blockchain network designed to reduce transaction costs and provide scalability, could accelerate future burns and increase adoption.

Context from the wider crypto market

SHIB’s cautious outlook comes as the broader cryptocurrency market endures significant volatility. Recent developments have seen major assets like Bitcoin briefly fall to $75,000, erasing $150 billion from the sector’s total value. High-profile incidents, such as a recent 70.5 million POL theft on the Polygon network prompting a proposed hard fork, continue to shape sentiment and highlight the risks across the digital asset landscape.

Burn rates have surged, but the total quantity burned remains relatively modest when compared to SHIB’s immense circulating supply.
