On November 6, 2026, South Korean cryptocurrency exchange GOPAX suspended all deposit, withdrawal, and trading services after receiving a threatening email from a group claiming responsibility for a hacking attempt.
The exchange initially suspended deposits and withdrawals at 2:55 p.m. KST before halting all trading activities at 3:53 p.m. KST. It also canceled all open market orders.
GOPAX said the suspension was a precautionary measure and that no asset losses or thefts had been confirmed. To protect customer funds, the exchange began moving most of its digital assets from internet-connected hot wallets into offline cold storage.

South Korean exchange Gopax has halted all trading, deposits, and withdrawals to migrate 100% of user assets to cold wallets. The move follows regulatory warnings over recent breaches. All open orders canceled; manual email withdrawals only. No ETA on resumption.

With its automated services unavailable, users who urgently need access to their funds must submit manual requests through the customer support center. The requests will be handled sequentially after the exchange completes the necessary identity and security checks.

When a centralized exchange suspends withdrawals without confirming a security breach, users are left uncertain about the safety and accessibility of their funds.
Alphax_DEX ambassador @Zorven highlighted this concern, noting that GOPAX halted withdrawals following a threat rather than a confirmed theft. Zorven questioned whether users should treat such a move as an immediate warning to protect their funds or wait for the exchange to provide more information.

What most people miss about an exchange “hacking threat” alert:
Gopax just halted withdrawals in South Korea after a hacking threat — not after a confirmed drain headline.
That gap is where users either leave early or get stuck.
Do you treat a halt as the fire alarm, or wait for the post-mortem?

The uncertainty is particularly concerning because GOPAX reportedly experienced data leaks in September and October. Another commenter, @Madvoodo, questioned the exchange’s transparency and argued that users should demand immediate cryptographic proof of reserves and a clear timeline for resuming services.
Madvoodo’s reaction reflects concerns about centralized exchanges restricting access to customer funds. Although GOPAX’s decision was intended to protect assets, the suspension also means users temporarily lose direct control over funds held on the platform.

Withdrawals halted over a threat, not a stated breach. I would want proof of reserves and a clear timeline before trusting any balance on a custodial exchange

The hacking threat against GOPAX, along with repeated attacks and threats against major exchanges, could make it harder for digital assets to gain mainstream acceptance.
Sean, an Indie game developer on X, questioned the contradiction between cryptocurrency’s reputation for security and the vulnerabilities of the platforms that support its use. Sean noted that cryptocurrency was originally promoted as an inherently secure financial technology.

@WatcherGuru More crypto hacking? I thought crypto was meant to be really secure. How much more secure are they going to have to make it before it’s more widely adopted? 😳

GOPAX’s decision to move most customer funds into offline cold storage could help protect them from an attempted attack. However, the need to suspend trading and withdrawals and rely on manual customer requests highlights the security risks associated with centralized exchanges and internet-connected hot wallets.
Each time a major exchange shuts down its services in response to a cyber threat, it reinforces concerns that the cryptocurrency industry remains vulnerable to security failures. Until exchanges can provide stronger protection for customer assets while maintaining reliable access to funds, these incidents may continue to undermine public confidence in digital assets.
