Crypto ETF news today isn’t pretty. Bitcoin ETFs bled $430.20 million on November 5, the largest single-day outflow this month, as per SoSoValue data. Even so, cumulative net inflow into Bitcoin ETFs still stands at $56.11 billion, a sign long-term holders haven’t fully given up.

Smaller tokens got hit even harder than Bitcoin and Ethereum. Here’s where the pain concentrated, as per CoinGecko data:

Bitcoin Mining Shutdown Rattles The Industry

Core Scientific, once the world’s largest BTC miner, told investors on its Q3 earnings call that it’s walking away from Bitcoin mining for good. Active miners on its network have dropped almost 50% since the end of 2025.
The company plans a full shutdown of its mining business by Q4 2026 and will operate purely as a high-performance computing colocation provider from 2027.
The pivot isn’t hurting its books. Colocation revenue hit $215 million in Q3, up nearly 60% quarter-over-quarter, with EBITDA margin expanding to 57%. But a top miner exiting Bitcoin entirely still rattled sentiment across the sector.

AI Regulation Fear Triggers A Stock And Crypto Sell-Off

This is the biggest piece of why is crypto down today. Democrats swept both chambers of Congress, and traders now fear tighter rules on the AI industry, plus a planned investigation into Trump family business dealings, including crypto ventures, as per Wu Blockchain data.
Stocks fell hard first. The Nasdaq dropped 5.10%, the S&P 500 fell 3.43%, and the Dow Jones declined 2.41% intraday. Crypto followed fast. Binance data showed BTC down 5.97% to $75,695.68, touching a low of $75,568. Ethereum fell 7.29% to $2,247.74, with a low of $2,236.78.
CoinGlass recorded $879.92 million in liquidations in just four hours, split between $818.90 million in longs and $61.02 million in shorts. Over 24 hours, total liquidations reached $1.03 billion across 198,192 traders. The single largest liquidation hit Binance’s ETHUSDT pair at $10.94 million.

Whale Sell-Off Deepens The Pain

Pump.fun kept dumping SOL during the chaos. It deposited 76,111 SOL, worth $6.85 million, into Kraken, as per Lookonchain data. In total, Pump.fun has now sold 5,553,833 SOL worth $882.4 million at an average price of $158.88.
A separate whale offloaded 1 million UNI, worth $7.32 million, over the past two days. That wallet received 20.32 million UNI, worth $139.4 million, from the Uniswap UNI Timelock wallet roughly a year ago. Moves like this added fresh pressure right when confidence was already shaky and answers why is crypto down today.

What Next? Two Events To Watch This Week

Two launches land on November 9. Elysium, Kinetiq’s Layer-2 for Hyperliquid, goes live on mainnet after public testing that started September 22.

Separately, the Fort Canning upgrade activates on Enjin Blockchain’s Relaychain. Both could shift sentiment for their respective ecosystems once live.

Expert Opinion: Market behavior like this reflects overlapping triggers rather than a single cause. ETF outflow data from SoSoValue points to short-term institutional caution, not full exit, since cumulative inflows for both Bitcoin and Ethereum funds remain positive. The liquidation data from CoinGlass suggests leveraged positions amplified the drop beyond what spot selling alone would explain.
Analysts tracking on-chain flows note that whale activity, such as the Pump.fun and UNI transfers, tends to precede short-term volatility rather than long-term trend reversals.

Conclusion

So why is crypto down today? Political shock, ETF outflows, a major miner’s exit, and whale selling all landed together. BTC, Ethereum and XRP all slid hard, and the next clues arrive November 9 with two mainnet launches.
