Payward and its investment clients acquired AAVE through secondary-market purchases, avoiding a direct corporate equity transaction.

Aave’s DAO previously reported spending approximately $42 million on token buybacks, while a subsequent proposal sought to reduce the program’s annual budget.

The investment could support institutional adoption of Aave’s lending infrastructure, although no commercial integration has been announced.

Kraken parent Payward has acquired AAVE tokens alongside investment clients, taking a direct position in the governance asset of one of decentralized finance’s largest lending networks.

The purchases were conducted through Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP, a Payward-affiliated investment fund, according to the company’s November 5 announcement.

The transaction places institutional capital into Aave’s token economy at a time when its decentralized autonomous organization is reassessing how protocol revenue should support token purchases, treasury reserves and ecosystem development.

Why Payward Bought AAVE Instead of Corporate Equity

Payward’s investment differs from the transaction reportedly discussed earlier this year.

In June were reported negotiations involving 250,000 AAVE tokens and a proposed 15% equity stake in Aave Group, based on a reported corporate valuation of $385 million.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov subsequently disputed the proposed terms, including a reported substantial discount on the token component.

The latest purchases bypass the need for a discounted treasury allocation. Instead, Payward and its clients acquired existing tokens from market participants. The company has not disclosed execution prices, purchase dates or the size of its holdings.

The financial rights associated with each investment structure are materially different.

Structural comparison. Only the secondary-market token purchase is confirmed in Payward’s November 5 announcement.

Secondary-market accumulation can absorb available sell-side liquidity without increasing AAVE’s circulating supply. Its lasting price effect depends on execution, market depth and whether the acquired tokens remain in long-term portfolios.

Payward did not disclose wallet addresses associated with the acquisition, preventing independent attribution of specific token transfers to the investment fund.

Aave’s Buyback Program Faces a Treasury Test

Aave’s existing buyback mechanism provides a measurable connection between protocol revenue and token demand.

In a February treasury review, service provider TokenLogic reported that the DAO had acquired more than 205,000 AAVE for approximately $42 million during the program’s first 10 months.

The figures imply an average purchase price of approximately $205 per token and cumulative acquisitions equivalent to more than 1.28% of AAVE’s fixed 16 million-token supply.

Those purchases demonstrate that the DAO has already deployed substantial capital into its governance asset. However, the program’s future scale depends on available revenue.

TokenLogic subsequently proposed reducing the annual buyback budget from approximately $50 million to $30 million, citing pressure on treasury inflows and the need to preserve financial flexibility.

The proposed reduction would lower the annual allocation by 40%, potentially freeing $20 million for other priorities if adopted.

A proposal is not an enacted policy. Investors should distinguish the existing program from changes still subject to governance approval.

The AAVE token documentation also identifies a feature frequently overlooked in comparisons with corporate share repurchases: purchased tokens enter the DAO Ecosystem Reserve rather than being automatically burned.

The reserve can fund staking incentives, grants and approved service-provider payments. Tokens subsequently distributed from that reserve may return to circulation.

Consequently, buyback spending does not translate directly into a permanent reduction in token supply. Its economic effect depends on the balance between accumulated tokens and future treasury distributions.

Institutional Lending Creates a Commercial Opportunity

Aave reported approximately $33 billion in net deposits and $11 billion in active loans in Payward’s announcement.

The figures imply active borrowing equivalent to roughly 33% of reported deposits. That ratio offers a measure of lending activity, although DeFi collateral requirements and liquidity arrangements make it unsuitable as a direct comparison with a commercial bank’s loan-to-deposit ratio.

Aave’s institutional ambitions extend beyond its established lending markets.

Aave Horizon supports borrowing against tokenized real-world assets, while Aave Kit provides infrastructure for businesses integrating lending services into their applications.

For Payward, access to an established onchain credit network could complement Kraken’s trading, custody and financial infrastructure operations without requiring the group to build an independent lending protocol.

Payward Asset Management executive Gurpreet Oberoi characterized the investment as reflecting long-term conviction in onchain credit markets. Kulechov also emphasized opportunities to expand access for retail and institutional participants.

Neither company has announced a binding integration agreement, implementation timetable or projected revenue contribution.

The potential commercial benefit therefore remains separate from the confirmed investment.

Governance Participation Could Shape the Investment’s Value

AAVE token ownership also creates the possibility of participation in protocol governance.

Tokenholders can vote directly or delegate voting power on decisions involving treasury spending, lending-market parameters, security measures and protocol development.

An institutional investor with sufficient voting power could influence how Aave balances revenue-funded buybacks against ecosystem investment.

Those priorities are particularly relevant as the DAO evaluates treasury expenditure and the financial sustainability of its token acquisition program.

The Aave Will Win framework, under which Aave Labs committed to directing revenue from Aave-branded products toward the DAO treasury, could strengthen the relationship between commercial growth and governance-controlled resources.

However, AAVE ownership does not confer a conventional equity claim on Aave Labs’ profits or an automatic dividend.

The distinction between ownership and voting control also matters. Tokens held for separate investment clients do not necessarily constitute a coordinated governance position.

Payward’s acquisition establishes institutional demand for AAVE, but its longer-term significance will depend on whether the investment leads to sustained governance participation, commercial distribution or additional activity across Aave’s lending markets.
