CERT-In says attackers are using artificial intelligence to breach exchanges and fintech platforms at what it calls machine speed

India's Computer Emergency Response Team, known as CERT-In, has flagged a new wave of cyberattacks aimed at the country's crypto and fintech sectors. The agency says the attacks are being carried out by a hacker group using artificial intelligence tools to speed up and scale its operations.

According to the warning, the group is targeting crypto exchanges and fintech firms at what CERT-In describes as machine speed. That phrase points to a shift in how cybercriminals are operating. Automated systems can scan for vulnerabilities, craft phishing attempts, and adapt tactics far faster than human-led teams working through traditional methods.

CERT-In functions as India's primary cybersecurity watchdog, issuing advisories to businesses and government bodies when it identifies credible threats. Its warnings typically prompt firms to review security protocols, patch known vulnerabilities, and tighten access controls. The agency has not been reported as naming the specific hacker group involved, nor has it detailed which exchanges or fintech firms have already been affected.

The warning arrives as India's crypto and fintech industries continue to expand, drawing both legitimate investment and the attention of cybercriminals. Exchanges hold large pools of digital assets and sensitive customer data, making them attractive targets. Fintech platforms, which often handle payments and lending, present similar risks given the volume of financial data they process daily.

AI-assisted hacking has become a growing concern across the global cybersecurity community. Security researchers have noted that generative AI tools can help attackers write more convincing phishing messages, identify weaknesses in code, and automate parts of an intrusion that once required significant manual effort. This can compress the time between an initial breach attempt and a successful compromise, leaving defenders with less room to react.

For crypto exchanges specifically, the stakes are higher than for many other industries. Stolen funds can often be moved and laundered within minutes, especially when attackers use cross-chain tools or decentralized platforms to obscure the trail. That makes early detection and rapid response especially important once a breach begins.

CERT-In's advisory is likely to push Indian crypto and fintech firms to reassess their current defenses against AI-enhanced threats. Companies may need to invest in automated monitoring systems of their own, capable of detecting unusual activity in real time rather than relying solely on periodic audits.

The warning also reflects a broader pattern seen in other markets, where regulators and cybersecurity agencies have begun treating AI-powered attacks as a distinct category of risk, separate from conventional hacking attempts. India's response may offer a signal of how other national agencies could approach similar threats in the months ahead.

Market Impact

A government warning of this kind does not directly move crypto prices, but it can influence investor confidence in platforms operating within India's jurisdiction. Exchanges named or implicated in future disclosures could face scrutiny over their security practices, particularly if customer funds or data are compromised.

Fintech firms tied to crypto payment rails may also see increased compliance costs as they work to meet heightened security expectations. If CERT-In's warning leads to tangible breaches becoming public, it could accelerate calls for stricter cybersecurity standards across India's digital asset industry.

CERT-In's warning underscores how artificial intelligence is reshaping the threat landscape facing crypto and fintech firms. As AI tools become more accessible to attackers, Indian regulators and companies alike may face pressure to adopt faster, more automated defenses.
