House Democrats plan to launch formal investigations into the cryptocurrency dealings of President Donald Trump and his family after securing the majority in Congress. The probes are set to focus on World Liberty Financial, the Trump family’s DeFi and stablecoin initiative, as well as a $500 million investment by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, national security adviser of the United Arab Emirates, and the high-profile October 2025 pardon of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao.

Oversight committee prepares subpoenas

Rep. Robert Garcia of California, who will chair the House Oversight Committee, delivered a brief message after the election results: “Lawyer up.” His office stated that the committee intends to address what it calls the “Trump Crime Family” alongside other issues such as corporate corruption and immigration enforcement.

Garcia indicated to Punchbowl News that the committee’s inquiries will extend to the Trump family’s digital asset businesses, the activities of Donald Trump Jr., and the roles of other family members, including Jared Kushner’s board positions and related contracts.

For the first time in two years, House Democrats will have subpoena power, enabling them to compel testimony and documents from individuals and companies connected to the administration without presidential approval. Previously, their efforts were limited to requesting information and writing letters without the ability to enforce compliance.

Garcia reportedly plans to use this expanded authority to scrutinize the Trump family’s cryptocurrency ventures, business dealings of Donald Trump Jr., and contracts awarded to relatives such as Jared Kushner, using subpoenas to enforce cooperation from both public officials and private businesses.

World Liberty Financial and UAE investment under scrutiny

World Liberty Financial, established by the Trump family in September 2024, will be a primary focus. The $500 million investment by Sheikh Tahnoon’s group, which holds a 49% stake, occurred shortly before the January 2025 inauguration. According to The Wall Street Journal, Tahnoon’s and Trump-affiliated entities jointly control roughly 87% of the bank holding company behind World Liberty’s USD1 stablecoin.

World Liberty is currently seeking a federal trust bank charter for USD1, with conditional approval already granted by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Final approval remains pending. In February, House Democrats requested Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to investigate the World Liberty deal and review suspicious activity reports, but those requests were not legally binding. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats have begun their own inquiry into TRUMP token activities through the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, chaired by Richard Blumenthal.

Given the mounting attention on World Liberty and its coin, investors seeking to track developments can benefit from real-time, coin-specific news feeds. For example, CryptoAppsy enables users to follow breaking updates concerning the World Liberty USD1 stablecoin and monitor market reactions as the investigations progress and regulatory decisions emerge.

Pardon of Binance founder and massive crypto earnings

Another major element of the investigation is the October 2025 pardon of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, whose exchange played a role in launching USD1 and was recently hacked for $6.34 billion. Zhao maintains he has no business relationship with the Trump family and did not discuss clemency with them. Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure revealed over $1 billion in crypto-related income for himself, with $635 million of that from TRUMP memecoin royalties. Reuters estimated the family’s total crypto earnings at $2.3 billion or higher.

World Liberty Financial, the DeFi and stablecoin venture the Trump family launched in September 2024, stands as the first investigation target, due to both its federal charter application and the substantial stake acquired by UAE national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Expected limits and potential impact

The investigations are not expected to lead to new legislation, as President Trump retains veto power and Democrats do not hold a two-thirds majority in either chamber. White House press secretary Lauren Bis has dismissed the planned probes as “a decade long witch hunt,” signaling that the administration plans to push back on committee efforts.

Analysts expect the White House to invoke executive privilege and delay document production, a strategy it reportedly used during Trump’s earlier term. Democrats are likely to respond by focusing their subpoenas on private entities linked to the Trump family.

The implications for the digital asset sector are mainly political. TD Cowen’s Jaret Seiberg noted that the increasing scrutiny may stall progress on legislative efforts favored by the cryptocurrency industry, such as the Clarity Act. Bloomberg Intelligence identified crypto, defense, and technology as sectors most vulnerable to these investigations.
