Dfinity founder Dominic Williams (@dominic_w) is promoting the Internet Computer's custody technology to crypto exchanges, saying the current wave of attacks on trading platforms shows the need for a different security model. $ICP, the native token of the Internet Computer, is positioned by Dfinity as a base for tamper-proof custody aimed at institutions.

How Chain-Key Custody Is Meant to Work

According to Williams, the Dfinity Chain-Key design has no single point of failure. Instead of relying on a conventional private key held in one place, it uses a decentralized signing mechanism. Autonomous network canisters, which are smart contracts on the Internet Computer, trigger signing only when approved authorisation chains are satisfied.
The approach builds on threshold cryptography. In a Brave New Coin interview, Williams explained that chain-key ECDSA and threshold cryptography let Internet Computer smart contracts create their own Bitcoin addresses and sign Bitcoin transactions on the Bitcoin network. That capability underpins Chain-Key Bitcoin (ckBTC), which he described as a multi-chain twin of bitcoin secured 1:1 with the real asset.
Cryptonews reported that threshold signing of this kind lets multiple machines jointly generate a wallet address and produce signatures together, without any single party holding the complete private key. That design is the core of Dfinity's pitch: an attacker would have no single key to steal.

Why the Message Is Aimed at Exchanges

The pitch lands amid a run of high-profile exchange breaches. NPR reported that hackers, widely believed to be from North Korea, duped a Binance engineer into downloading malicious software, enabling a $6.3 billion theft from the exchange. NPR said the attack may have taken only about twenty minutes, though the preparation took months. Separately, Cryptonomist reported that BitMart suffered a security breach on November 2 involving a smaller amount of funds, with early findings pointing to a possible link to the Mercado Bitcoin hack.
Williams has recently used the same technology as a talking point in a dispute with NEAR Protocol. Cryptonews noted that he accused NEAR of using cryptographic research that Dfinity licenses exclusively for ICP, and that NEAR has not confirmed his claims about personnel. The allegations remain unresolved.
Dfinity has not named any exchange that has adopted the system for custody. Whether exchanges will move away from established custody setups toward a canister-based model remains to be seen, and the Binance incident, which NPR traced to social engineering of an employee, shows that attacks can target people and processes as well as key storage.
