Binance proof of reserves became a public talking point in November 2022. The fall of FTX had left many traders asking if any big exchange held the coins it claimed to hold. Proof of reserves, or PoR, is a way for an exchange to list the wallets it controls. The exchange also posts a data summary of what it owes to users. Anyone can then compare the two numbers. The idea brought much-needed light to a closed market. Many platforms soon copied it.
Still, a reserve report answers only part of the solvency question. The Binance proof of reserves system shows that certain wallets held certain assets at one moment. It also shows that user balances add up to a stated total. It cannot show that the exchange owes nothing else. It cannot show that the coins are free of outside claims. It also cannot show that users have a clear legal right to them if the firm fails. This guide explains what the system proves, where its limits are, and which extra tools help fill the gaps.

What Does Binance Proof of Reserves Actually Demonstrate On-Chain?

The Binance proof of reserves model is built on a Merkle tree. This is a tool that shrinks a large set of records into one short code. Each user account becomes a leaf. The leaf is made by hashing a user ID with the coin balances in that account. The leaves are hashed in pairs, and the results are paired and hashed again. This goes on until one value is left at the top. That last value is called the Merkle root.

What Do zk-SNARKs Add to the Binance Reserve Proof?

The exchange later added zk-SNARKs to its Binance proof of reserves process. The name stands for Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge. It is a proof that lets one side show a claim is true without sharing the data behind it. Here, the proof shows that user balances were added up right and that no balance was below zero. That second point matters. A hidden negative entry could make the stated debt look smaller on paper, while the real sum owed stayed high.

What Does The Asset Side Of The Reserve Report Show?

On the asset side, the exchange lists wallet addresses that anyone can look up on public blockchains. The exchange often proves it owns those addresses with signed messages or auditor tests. Experts then compare the wallet balances with the debt total from the Merkle tree. This gives a reserve ratio for each listed coin. Each Binance proof of reserves release is thus narrow. It confirms that user balances were summed right. It also confirms that certain addresses held a stated amount when the snapshot was taken.
In short, Binance proof of reserves gives traders three checks:

Inclusion: a user balance appears in the published Merkle tree.

Arithmetic: the debt total was added up right, with no negative balances.

Visibility: certain public wallet addresses held a stated amount at snapshot time.

How Do Unverified Off-Chain Liabilities Compromise Reserve Reports?

A reserve report measures assets that can be seen on a blockchain. It does not measure all that a firm owes. Loans, deals with trading partners, tax bills, legal claims, and unpaid vendors are all off-chain liabilities that no wallet explorer can show. A platform could thus show fully backed user assets. Meanwhile, it could carry heavy debt elsewhere on its books.

What Does the Liability Side of the Report Leave Out?

Many experts call PoR just half of a balance sheet. In the Binance proof of reserves design, the debt figure comes from the Merkle tree and covers user balances alone. All else stays outside the report. That includes debt taken on by linked firms that share owners or funding with the exchange.
The FTX case is the best known example. User deposits were moved to a related trading firm, Alameda Research, and outsiders could not see that hidden claim on the assets.

How Far Does A Third Party Review Really Go In Practice?

Outside reviewers have often done agreed-upon procedures. These checks are narrower than a full audit and give no opinion on solvency. The reviewer tests only what both sides agreed to test. That leaves the treatment of each product as an open question. Margin loans, futures, earn products, and staked coins can each be counted in different ways. Binance proof of reserves documents say which balances count as user debt. Readers must trust that those rules are complete. Trust in this model also took a hit in December 2022. That month, Mazars, the firm that had reviewed Binance reserves, paused its crypto work.

Holding coins in a wallet is not the same as holding them free and clear. Encumbered assets are coins that have been pledged as collateral, lent out, or tied to a claim by a third party. A wallet that looks full on a block explorer may still be covered by a lien or a loan deal signed off-chain. Nothing in the on-chain data shows that.

Who Legally Owns The Coins In A Bankruptcy Case?

Control of private keys adds another layer of doubt. Direct control of an address means the exchange can move the coins. That does not decide who the law treats as the owner. In a bankruptcy, courts look at contracts, terms of service, and local property law. In January 2023, a United States bankruptcy court ruled in the Celsius case that assets placed in its Earn program belonged to the estate. That left many account holders as unsecured creditors.
For that reason, Binance proof of reserves data cannot settle legal custody on its own. A user with a balance on any exchange often holds a contract claim against the firm. The strength of that claim depends on how assets are kept apart, on local law, and on the exact words of the user agreement.

Conclusion

Binance proof of reserves marks real progress in exchange openness. The Merkle tree lets users confirm that their own balances were counted. zk-SNARKs protect privacy while blocking negative balances. Public wallet addresses give experts something real to inspect. Next to the blind trust that ruled the market before late 2022, that is a clear step forward.
The system also has firm limits. It captures one moment and ignores off-chain debts. It cannot reveal pledged or reused assets. It also says nothing about who holds legal title in a bankruptcy.
Traders who treat Binance proof of reserves as a full solvency guarantee read more into it than the math supports. A sounder view treats it as one useful input. It works best when paired with audits, regulation, debt disclosure, and careful self-custody habits.
