Brown

NBC News, based on AP data, projects Sherrod Brown as the winner of the Ohio Senate race against Jon Husted. At 10:37 CET it stood at 49.7 to 45.5 percent with 97 percent counted. No race of 2026 has cost the crypto industry more. Fairshake's affiliate Defend American Jobs had reported $46.6 million against Brown by 15 October, and Semafor later reported that Fairshake is spending $55 million. Two years ago the same network spent about $40 million and won. Brown's win is the industry's most expensive defeat of the cycle, and it shows how far crypto money can carry an election, shortly after the CLARITY Act failed a key Senate vote.

Ohio Senate race: Sherrod Brown, Jon Husted and the crypto money

Brown chaired the Senate Banking Committee until 2025 and was one of the sharpest critics of the industry's agenda, which made him crypto's top target in both cycles. In 2024, Fairshake spent roughly $40 million for Bernie Moreno, who won by 3.6 points. In September 2026 the group announced at least $30 million against Brown, and by mid-October that had grown past $46 million, Decrypt reported from FEC filings, the most expensive target of the cycle. The Digital Freedom Fund, founded by the Winklevoss twins, added more than $5.9 million.

Brown turned that into a campaign line. He told Pod Save America that Husted is "their boy" and framed crypto's ads as part of a broader fight against Wall Street, big pharma and big oil, Cointelegraph reports. Ohio reported early and absentee ballots first, which is why the lead shrank through the night.

Ohio governor race: Ramaswamy, Strive and Bitcoin

The second crypto storyline in Ohio is the governor's race. NBC News projects Amy Acton as the winner, 52.0 to 44.7 percent with 97 percent counted. Vivek Ramaswamy co-founded Strive, which reported about 23,156 BTC, worth roughly $2 billion at the end of August, and he publicly backed the Ohio Strategic Cryptocurrency Reserve Act before launching his campaign. His public statements on crypto have waned during the campaign, Cointelegraph notes, and he is not putting them at the forefront. Data centers and electricity costs became a major issue in the race.

Ramaswamy and Byron Donalds in Florida have both backed state Bitcoin reserve proposals. Such bills would still have to pass the state legislatures.

Fairshake's midterm scorecard: six candidates with $1 million each

On 5 October, Fairshake announced support for 32 House incumbents, 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats, and put $1 million each behind six of them. Fairshake says it backs pro-crypto candidates in both parties. That fits the math of the next market structure bill, which needs both parties to reach 60 votes in the Senate. Here is how those six stand (10:37 CET).

What the Ohio result means for Bitcoin and crypto

Fairshake's real product is deterrence. Lawmakers do not have to agree with crypto, they only have to fear being the next Sherrod Brown. Brown's win after more than $50 million in ads weakens that message going into 2028, and it suggests that voters can see through a super PAC whose ads often avoid crypto.

The policy effect is smaller than the symbolism. Under current rules, Semafor reports, Brown does not automatically get his old seniority on the Banking Committee back, though Democrats could change that. The CLARITY Act reached only 49 votes in September and needs 60; what happens next is in our CLARITY Act explainer. The national count is in our midterm results live ticker.

For the market, one state does not move Bitcoin on its own. If you hold coins through a volatile week, compare regulated crypto exchanges or crypto brokers first.
