Crypto had a hard year, and wallet apps felt it too. Prices fell, funding dried up, and some teams shut down after security incidents. Crypto wallet shutdowns in 2026 affected five apps that many users relied on.

Many wallets launched in the last cycle expecting steady fee income. In 2026, several <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/best-crypto-wallets-october-2026-6-picks-for-secure-holdings" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto wallet</a> services closed as costs rose and users moved to larger apps. This guide covers five crypto wallet shutdowns and discontinued services, using official sources where available.

<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-1-magic-eden-wallet-span-span">1. Magic Eden Wallet</h3>
Magic Eden Wallet was a Web3 wallet application from the NFT marketplace, with portfolio tracking, swaps and $ME rewards.
<h4>Why Magic Eden Closed It</h4>
In late February, the company said it would shut its Bitcoin and EVM NFT marketplaces and the <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/best-multi-chain-wallets-2026-top-choices-for-crypto-holders" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">multi-chain wallet</a>, making them crypto platforms discontinued in 2026. It returned to Solana, where most of its volume sat. Its CEO also said the company would double down on Dicey, a casino and sports betting platform launched in January.
<h4>What Users Had to Do</h4>
Support ended on 1 April, and the wallet went into export-only mode. Decrypt reported that installed copies could export keys until 1 May. The ME token was down 99.94% from its December 2024 high of $17.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-2-leap-wallet-span-span">2. Leap Wallet</h3>
Leap launched in 2022 as a <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/best-non-custodial-crypto-wallets-in-2026-top-5-secure-picks" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">non-custodial crypto wallet</a> for Terra and grew into a Cosmos favourite. Its docs say one mnemonic managed assets across 200+ networks, with private keys kept on the user’s device.
<h4>Why Leap Closed</h4>
Leap announced on 2 April that it would sunset all products by 28 May. The team said the decision was not made lightly and gave no specific reason. The closure covered its extension, mobile apps, web app, Swapfast and Cosmos Hub validator.
<h4>What Users Had to Do</h4>
Users had about eight weeks to migrate. The crypto wallet apps are no longer supported, but the same address can be restored in another wallet with the recovery phrase or private key. Users with delegated ATOM were urged to redelegate early.

<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-3-xenea-span-span">3. Xenea</h3>
Xenea is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 with decentralized storage, according to its docs. Its wallet app ran a rewards program before the mainnet, and more than 500,000 users took part, CoinStats reported.
<h4>Why Xenea Stopped</h4>
The team announced on 5 July that the wallet would end on 9 July at 06:00 UTC. On 13 July, it said the project faced “significant difficulty” continuing operations as planned. It will handle the situation through the “correct legal process.”
<h4>What Users Had to Do</h4>
This wallet service termination gave only days of notice. Users had to export their <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/private-key-crypto-wallet-explained-2026" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">private key</a> and import it into an EVM wallet such as MetaMask. The website and the Ubusuna testnet are being shut, and formal updates come only through Xenea’s official X and Telegram channels.

<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-4-ctrl-wallet-span-span">4. Ctrl Wallet</h3>
Ctrl, formerly XDEFI, was founded in 2020 and was a self-custody wallet supporting 2,500+ blockchains. Its site cites more than 600,000 users.
<h4>Why Ctrl Closed</h4>
The team announced the shutdown on 7 July. Its notice gave no reason, though several reports linked it to a <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/cardano-wallet-recovery-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Cardano wallet</a> vulnerability in late June.
<h4>What Users Had to Do</h4>
All features worked until 2 August, and from 3 August only recovery phrase export remained. The team said there would be no migration token, airdrop or refund. Its site now states the wallet has been permanently shut down as of 19 August.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-5-secondfi-span-span">5. SecondFi</h3>
SecondFi was formerly the Yoroi wallet, a Cardano wallet.
<h4>Why SecondFi Closed</h4>
A security incident between 21 and 23 June led the team to cease operations, its help center says. Reports put losses at about 16.1 million ADA. It is the clearest case of why crypto wallet security matters.
<h4>What Users Had to Do</h4>
The migration tool moves ADA, native tokens and NFTs, but only Cardano assets. Non-Cardano assets must be moved separately. An asset recovery tool, launched on 7 October, uses zero-knowledge proofs and asks for a seed phrase only inside the official tool on secondfi.io. The SecondFi card program closes on 30 November.

<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-happens-when-a-crypto-wallet-shuts-down-span-span">What Happens When a Crypto Wallet Shuts Down?</h2>
Coins stay on the blockchain. A wallet is only the tool for digital asset storage access, as Ctrl’s own FAQ explains. When an app closes, funds remain reachable through the recovery phrase or private key. Discontinued crypto wallets cannot recover a lost phrase for users, as Ctrl warned.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-private-key-security-what-users-should-do-span-span">Private Key Security: What Users Should Do</h2>
<ul>
<li>Complete a seed phrase backup offline before the deadline.</li>
 <li>Move funds to a <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/best-crypto-wallets-for-staking-in-2026-top-choices" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">new wallet</a> you control, not an exchange address.</li>
<li>Never share a phrase with anyone. SecondFi and Ctrl both said support will never ask.</li>
<li>Ignore fake migration tools and airdrops during a shutdown.</li>
</ul>

Xenea also shows how <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/layer-1-and-layer-2-crypto-projects-shutdown-12-major-exits" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Layer 1 blockchain closures</a> can follow an app shutdown. Together, these cases are part of wider Web3 ecosystem shutdowns this year.

Crypto Wallet&nbsp;<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-projects-shut-down-in-2026-full-list-and-key-reasons" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Shutdown in 2026</a> shows that an app can disappear while the funds stay on-chain. Users who kept their own keys moved on. Those who did not had to rely on migration tools.
