The altcoin market has entered a phase marked by declining prices and consolidation, closely following historical patterns identified over the past decade. Vandell Aljarrah, co-founder of Black Swan Capitalist, addressed holders of XRP and other altcoins, cautioning them about the recurring dynamics he believes are engineered to pressure out retail participants before a potential market expansion.

Three cycles, same playbook

Aljarrah shared insights based on a decade-long logarithmic chart of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization, excluding Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins. The latest reading shows a market cap of $479.49 billion for this altcoin segment. The chart reveals a consistent ascending channel since 2015, with price cycles characterized by orderly declines and consolidations, each followed by a broad expansion phase.

According to the historical data, the first major cycle lasted from 2015 to 2018, culminating in a significant upward surge once consolidation concluded. The cycle between 2018 and 2021 mirrored this same pattern, seeing altcoin valuations reach as high as $1.4 trillion.

Each expansion phase over the past decade delivered higher highs for altcoins, while never breaking below the boundaries of the long-term ascending channel, according to Vandell Aljarrah’s analysis.

From 2022 through 2025, another cycle played out with marked growth after a period of price compression. During this period, XRP alone saw gains of more than 500%, reaching new highs before broader market momentum slowed down.

All three previous surges followed the same underlying market structure, indicating a resilience of this recurring pattern across the years.

Current market setup and future projections

The altcoin market presently finds itself in the midst of a decline and consolidation phase. Market capitalization is nearing the lower boundary of the established ascending channel, suggesting that the market is following the same cycle observed in the past.

Aljarrah observed that, in prior cycles, similar contractions ultimately led to substantial expansions. Projections based on the chart’s upper channel suggest that the next rally could carry the altcoin market cap to a range of $3.4 trillion to $7 trillion, should the pattern persist.

Aljarrah’s message to retail investors

Emphasizing behavioral elements in market cycles, Aljarrah believes the ongoing consolidation period is orchestrated to test and ultimately push out less patient investors before a rebound takes place. He has repeatedly cautioned holders of XRP and other altcoins not to capitulate in the face of negative sentiment or compressed prices.

Vandell Aljarrah stated, “They want you out before the next expansion. Shake the weak hands, then run it without them. Don’t sell into the pressure they created. That’s the game.”

Based on the repeating technical pattern, he argued that selling now could mean missing out on a historic upside if the altcoin market follows its established cycle into a new expansion phase.
