The hardware wallet maker says vulnerabilities baked into older Apple chips cannot be fixed with software updates, raising risks for crypto holders.

The founder of hardware wallet maker OneKey has issued a warning about older Apple devices. According to the warning, iPhone 11 models and earlier contain chip vulnerabilities that cannot be patched through software. The flaws are described as rooted in the hardware itself, not in iOS.

This distinction matters. Software vulnerabilities can typically be addressed through updates pushed by Apple. Hardware-level flaws sit deeper in a device's architecture. Once a chip ships with a design weakness, later firmware fixes may only limit, not eliminate, the exposure.

For most smartphone owners, this kind of vulnerability is a general security concern. For cryptocurrency holders, the stakes are different. Many people store seed phrases, use mobile wallet apps, or authorize transactions directly from their iPhones. A compromised chip could theoretically allow attackers to access sensitive data tied to digital asset custody, even if the user has otherwise followed standard security practices.

OneKey builds hardware wallets designed to keep private keys isolated from internet-connected devices. The company's business model depends on convincing users that software-only security, including that built into smartphones, has limits. The warning about older iPhones fits that broader argument. It frames aging consumer hardware as a weak link in the chain that protects crypto assets.

The warning does not claim that newer iPhone models carry the same risk. It specifically targets iPhone 11 and earlier generations, suggesting the vulnerability is tied to chip designs used in that era of devices. Apple has not been reported as issuing a public response to the specific claims at the time of publication.

Crypto investors have faced a steady stream of warnings about device security in recent years, ranging from malicious wallet apps to supply chain attacks on hardware. Chip-level vulnerabilities, if accurate, represent a more difficult category of threat. They cannot be resolved by simply updating an operating system or switching wallet providers while continuing to use the same physical device.

The practical advice implied by this kind of warning typically centers on reducing reliance on general-purpose smartphones for sensitive crypto operations. Using dedicated hardware wallets, isolating seed phrase storage from any internet-connected device, and retiring older hardware are common recommendations in the security community. None of these measures eliminate risk entirely, but they can reduce the attack surface available to bad actors targeting outdated chips.

Market Impact

The warning is unlikely to move cryptocurrency prices directly, but it may influence consumer behavior around wallet security. Hardware wallet makers like OneKey stand to benefit from heightened awareness of smartphone-based vulnerabilities, since their products are marketed as an alternative to storing keys on general-purpose devices.

The broader crypto security industry has repeatedly flagged device-level risks as a persistent challenge for retail investors. If the claims about unpatchable chip flaws gain wider attention, they could accelerate adoption of dedicated hardware wallets and prompt renewed scrutiny of how exchanges and wallet apps handle device security assumptions.

The warning adds to a growing list of security concerns facing crypto holders who rely on everyday consumer devices. Whether Apple or independent researchers weigh in with further detail remains to be seen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which iPhone models are affected according to the warning?

The warning specifically names iPhone 11 and earlier models as carrying the chip-level vulnerabilities described.

Can Apple fix this vulnerability with a software update?

No. The warning describes the flaw as hardware-based, meaning it cannot be resolved through iOS software patches.

Why does this matter specifically for crypto users?

Many crypto holders use their phones to store seed phrases or sign transactions, so compromised chips could expose sensitive wallet data.

Who issued the warning?

The warning was issued by the founder of OneKey, a company that makes hardware wallets for storing cryptocurrency private keys.
