Westpac, one of Australia's four largest banks, will start limiting how much money customers can send to cryptocurrency exchanges from December 1, 2026. The bank may reject payments it identifies as going to crypto exchanges once a customer exceeds A$10,000 in a single month, with no exceptions allowed for any account holder.

The bank described the policy in its own words, saying it "may limit payments we reasonably identified as being made to cryptocurrency exchanges to a $10,000 cumulative monthly limit." That word "may" is important. Westpac has also acknowledged it cannot guarantee every payment above the cap will actually be blocked, meaning the policy is applied at the bank's discretion rather than as a hard technical barrier.
What the A$10,000 cap covers and who it affects

The monthly limit applies across all Westpac products, including online banking, the Westpac mobile app, and credit and debit cards. Starting December 1, branch staff will no longer process payments to crypto exchanges at all, according to reporting from Unchained Crypto. The cap covers outbound payments only. Withdrawals moving money from an exchange back into a Westpac account are not affected.
Joint account holders each get their own separate A$10,000 monthly allowance. So a shared account between two people would have two individual limits, not one shared pool. No customer can request an increase or exception, regardless of their account history or the reason for the transfer. More on this in Artificial intelligence summit –Indonesia 2026.

One particularly frustrating detail for customers: Westpac will not publish the list of exchanges it monitors. That means a customer cannot check in advance whether a specific exchange will count toward the cap. They may only discover a payment has been flagged after it has already been blocked or delayed.

Why fraud rules are driving the change

Westpac has framed the new restrictions as an anti-scam measure rather than a stance on cryptocurrency itself. The bank pointed to the National Anti-Scam Centre's Targeting Scams Report, published in March 2026, which found that cryptocurrency featured in 46% of reported Australian scam losses in 2025.

The policy is designed to limit financial harm from scams that instruct victims to send money to a crypto exchange, often as part of investment fraud or romance scams. In these schemes, victims are talked into buying crypto and sending it onward, making recovery nearly impossible. Limiting how much can be sent per month is a blunt but fast-acting control.

This puts Westpac in line with broader Australian banking sector moves. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia introduced an identical A$10,000 monthly cap on payments to crypto exchanges back in June 2023. Westpac itself trialled broader crypto payment blocks as far back as May 2023. The December 2026 implementation follows that earlier testing period.

What Westpac customers using crypto exchanges should watch for

If you send more than A$10,000 to a crypto exchange in a single month through Westpac, some or all of the excess may be rejected. The key word in Westpac's own policy language is "may," meaning rejection is not guaranteed but is a real possibility for higher-volume transactions.

Because Westpac will not publish a list of covered exchanges, the safest approach before December 1 is to contact the bank directly or check its official communications to understand how the policy applies to your specific transactions. If you regularly move larger amounts into crypto, you may want to explore whether your exchange supports alternative funding methods or banking relationships outside Westpac.

For most casual crypto holders, the cap is unlikely to affect day-to-day activity. Sending under A$10,000 to an exchange per month falls within the limit. The policy is aimed primarily at high-volume transfers, which regulators have flagged as a common pathway for scam losses.

Crypto markets are already under cautious sentiment, with the Fear & Greed Index sitting at 30, in "Fear" territory, as of late October 2026. For investors researching where and how to trade, understanding an exchange's payment options is increasingly important as Australian banks add friction to crypto deposits. Evaluating platforms with transparent banking relationships is part of that due diligence, and resources like the Extended Exchange review or a newer platform like Hibachi, which operates on a stablecoin-based model, may be worth considering as users think through their options.

The broader takeaway is practical. Westpac is not banning crypto outright. It is adding a monthly ceiling on how much it will help you move there, and it may not always enforce it perfectly. Customers who stay under A$10,000 per month will likely see no disruption at all.
