Circles sized to the reported surplus of assets over liabilities

The buffer is simply reported assets minus liabilities. Comparing the June reserve report with the September report, assets rose about $3.7 billion while liabilities, mostly the USDT in circulation, edged down by about $145 million. Together that adds roughly $3.8 billion to the surplus.

That is $2.3 billion more than the quarter’s $1.5 billion operating profit. The surplus is a cushion spread across the whole portfolio, not an $8 billion pile of cash, so the extra growth had to come from somewhere other than retained earnings.

Where the extra value came from

The largest single contributor was Bitcoin. Tether’s direct position rose from $5.8 billion to $8.4 billion, an increase of about $2.6 billion, close to the size of the gap above profit. The Bitcoin price used to value it rose 42.6% between the two reports, while the balance rose about 45%, so most of that gain came from price rather than from buying more coins.

A higher valuation is not the same as cash in hand: the gain exists on paper until the coins are sold. Other balances also climbed. Physical gold, public equities, other investments and secured loans all reported higher values, and the public-equity line includes indirect Bitcoin and gold exposure, which adds more sensitivity to market prices. Without a statement separating purchases from price gains, the exact split stays unclear.

A smaller cash-like core

While the surplus grew, the most liquid part of the reserves shrank slightly:

June 30 → September 30. Treasury bills and repos sit inside the short-term total. Rounded figures.

The short-term category fell from 74.9% to 72.9% of total assets. Inside it, Tether moved out of overnight reverse repos and into directly held Treasury bills, which it can sell in the market but which carry their own maturities. On its own, that rotation does not show weaker redemption liquidity. It does show that the bigger surplus came with a different mix of assets, rather than a bigger cash-like core.

The restated starting line

The September report includes a nine-month equity reconciliation, and its starting point is not the one June used:

Struck-through figure: opening equity as reported in June. Restated by about $476M.

The report says opening equity and comparative figures were aligned with audited 2025 financial statements approved in August, including accounting-policy refinements and the treatment of later events. That revision follows Tether’s announced 2025 audit.

The restatement means June’s year-to-date result can’t simply be subtracted from September’s to get a clean third-quarter profit, and differences in the capital-movement lines aren’t necessarily quarterly dividends. The $1.5 billion operating profit, the $1,660 million financial result and the change in equity are three different measures, and the public documents don’t line them up on a common quarterly basis.

What a holder can take from it

A bigger surplus means Tether could absorb larger losses on its reported figures. Paying out redemptions is a separate test: it depends on which assets can be turned into dollars, and how fast, through working markets, custodians and banks. BDO’s quarterly engagement gives reasonable assurance over the reserve figures as of September 30, and notes that the valuations assume normal trading conditions rather than extreme illiquidity.

How a holder gets out also matters:

Redeem with Tether · approved accounts only, $100,000 minimum, fee of $1,000 or 0.1%, whichever is greater, under its published fee schedule

Sell on an exchange · no account with Tether, but the price depends on market liquidity and on traders who arbitrage exchange prices against issuer redemption

Most holders use the second route, which is how the reserves reach them only indirectly, as Coindoo’s guide to how USDT issuance and redemption work explains.

Two disclosures would settle what the $8 billion figure is made of: June’s figures restated to September’s accounting policies, and a quarterly split of retained income, valuation changes and capital movements. With those, the gap between the $1.5 billion profit and the $3.8 billion rise in the buffer could be traced line by line.
