U.S. cryptocurrency stocks plunged on Friday, October 30, as a technology-sector selloff collided with a record security breach at Binance, pushing Bitcoin toward $77,000 and prompting investors to cut exposure to digital asset businesses.
Coinbase fell approximately 12.93% during the session, while Strategy declined around 7%.

Mining companies including Hut 8, Riot Platforms and MARA lost roughly 9%, according to intraday market figures. The declines came as Intel plunged nearly 28% following disappointing guidance, dragging technology shares lower alongside concerns about the cost of artificial intelligence investment.
The two developments created overlapping pressures: deteriorating sentiment across U.S. growth stocks and a cryptocurrency-specific shock that raised fresh questions about exchange security and market liquidity.

Intel’s Outlook Triggers Broader Technology Selling

Intel became one of Friday’s biggest market casualties after forecasting fourth-quarter revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.25 per share.
The outlook disappointed investors despite a stronger third quarter, when revenue increased 21% year over year to $16.5 billion.
In its official earnings release, Intel acknowledged continued weakness in personal computer demand, even as its data-center business benefited from expanding AI infrastructure investment.
The divergence exposed a problem facing technology manufacturers: demand for AI-related computing capacity remains strong, but it does not guarantee equally robust profitability across their businesses.
Amazon added to concerns after reporting substantial capital expenditure and negative free cash flow, reinforcing investor scrutiny of whether AI investment can generate adequate returns.
The Nasdaq Composite declined approximately 2.3%, while the S&P 500 lost around 1.4% during the session. The selloff was concentrated in major technology companies rather than evenly distributed across the U.S. market.
Cryptocurrency equities entered that environment with an additional disadvantage: Bitcoin was already falling following the Binance breach.

Binance Hack Sends Bitcoin Lower as $3B Is Frozen

Binance confirmed that attackers had compromised systems involved in processing cryptocurrency withdrawals, with the exchange estimating the total impact at approximately $6.3 billion.
In its official security announcement, Binance said its initial investigation pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop. The attacker allegedly accessed a service container and initiated unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
The exchange reported no evidence of wallet private-key leakage, although subsequent investigations identified additional points of compromise.
Approximately $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen through cooperation with blockchain partners, including stablecoin issuers.
That distinction matters for assessing the financial damage. Freezing stolen stablecoins can prevent their further transfer, but it does not automatically mean those assets have been returned to Binance. Bitcoin and Ether generally lack the centralized issuer controls available for freezing certain stablecoins.
Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while conducting security checks. The company pledged to cover customer losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users and corporate resources.
Blockchain investigators also reported evidence of coordinated unauthorized withdrawals across multiple networks. However, the full attack sequence and responsibility remain subject to investigation.
Bitcoin fell toward $77,000, while Ether also weakened sharply. The security incident increased uncertainty over cryptocurrency custody at a time when broader equity-market risk appetite was already deteriorating.

Coinbase’s Earnings Reveal a More Complicated Picture

Coinbase faced an additional challenge after publishing its third-quarter financial results on Thursday.
The company reported $719 million in GAAP net income, but management acknowledged that investment gains on cryptocurrency holdings accounted for much of the reported profit. Adjusted net income was considerably lower at approximately $78 million.
According to Coinbase’s official earnings release, adjusted EBITDA reached $333 million, increasing 60% from the previous quarter.
The underlying business showed signs of diversification:

Subscription and services accounted for 49% of net revenue.

Average USDC balances held in Coinbase products reached $22 billion, up 49% year over year.

Coinbase’s crypto trading-volume market share increased to 10.7%.

Paid Coinbase One subscribers rose 24% annually.

The figures show that Coinbase gained market share despite difficult industry trading conditions. Management said total cryptocurrency market trading volume declined 10% during the quarter as volatility reached multiyear lows before recovering in September.
Higher market share therefore did not necessarily translate into stronger absolute transaction revenue.
The growing contribution from subscriptions, stablecoin-related services and other products provides a more diversified revenue base, but those businesses have not eliminated Coinbase’s sensitivity to cryptocurrency trading activity.
Its prediction-market business also exceeded $200 million in annualized revenue. That represents a run rate rather than $200 million of revenue earned during the quarter.
Friday’s share-price decline reflected the market’s reassessment of these earnings against a deteriorating backdrop for cryptocurrency prices and exchange confidence.

Why Bitcoin’s Drop Hit Miners and Treasury Stocks Harder

The declines among BTC miners and digital asset treasury companies reflected different forms of financial exposure. At the time of writing Bitcoin traded at $77,388 on October 30, according to TradingView, after falling sharply below the $80,000 level.

Mining businesses earn Bitcoin-denominated revenue while paying significant operating costs for electricity, equipment and infrastructure. Falling cryptocurrency prices can compress mining margins unless offset by lower costs, higher production or more favorable network conditions.
For Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, the primary issue is balance-sheet sensitivity.
Strategy holds substantial Bitcoin reserves and finances its accumulation strategy through capital-market transactions, making its valuation sensitive to both cryptocurrency prices and financing conditions.
Investors also price in future issuance, the cost of capital and any premium or discount to the value of Bitcoin held. A simultaneous decline in Bitcoin and growth-oriented equities can pressure both sides of that valuation.
For mining companies pursuing AI infrastructure projects, tighter capital-market conditions introduce another consideration. Expansion into data centers can diversify future revenue, but construction and equipment spending may increase financing requirements before projects generate cash flow.
Bitcoin’s immediate technical picture has also weakened. The $80,000 level, which had repeatedly attracted buying interest earlier in October, now represents an important area to reclaim. A sustained recovery above it would improve the short-term structure, while another move below $77,000 could expose the intraday lows around $76,300.
Friday’s trading left investors assessing two unresolved developments: whether Binance can restore confidence while accounting for the affected assets, and whether technology companies can justify elevated AI spending without further deterioration in earnings expectations.
