By the end of 2027, the G20 wants 75% of cross-border payments to reach recipients within one hour.
That target, established through the G20’s Cross-Border Payments <a href="https://www.fsb.org/work-of-the-fsb/financial-innovation-and-structural-change/cross-border-payments/g20-targets-for-enhancing-cross-border-payments-2/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Roadmap</a>, covers wholesale payments, retail payments, and remittances.
Crypto analyst Crypto Rover called it “HUGE FOR XRP,” noting XRP “could play a MAJOR role in this global transformation.” The G20 target is real. The XRP connection deserves a closer look.

The Financial Stability Board’s 2025 assessment found global progress toward the target remained limited. Only 54.6% of wholesale payments currently reach recipients within one hour. For retail payment services, the figure sits at just 35.4%. The 2027 deadline is approaching, and the gap is significant.
The G20’s roadmap also addresses cost. It calls for an average global cost of no more than 1% per transaction by 2027, with no corridor exceeding 3%. Speed and affordability are both part of the mandate.
<h2 id="strong-where-xrp-enters-the-picture-strong">Where XRP Enters the Picture</h2>
The G20 target is technology-neutral. It does not designate <a href="https://timestabloid.com/researcher-unveils-a-link-between-ripple-treasury-xrp-and-swift/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP, XRPL, Swift,</a> or any specific payment network as the solution. Countries can reach the target through domestic instant-payment systems, upgraded messaging infrastructure, stablecoins, CBDCs, or other technologies.
XRP’s characteristics, however, make it a legitimate candidate in the conversation. Cross-border transactions typically involve multiple intermediaries, currency conversions, and liquidity arrangements. <a href="https://timestabloid.com/ripple-ceo-tells-banker-for-xrp-a-settlement-happens-in-3-seconds/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP can settle transactions in seconds</a> and function as a <a href="https://timestabloid.com/expert-says-xrp-will-claim-its-spot-as-the-global-bridge-asset/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">bridge asset between currencies</a>. That reduces reliance on traditional correspondent banking arrangements.
Ripple, the company that develops payment infrastructure utilizing <a href="https://timestabloid.com/know-difference-between-ripple-xrp-and-xrp-ledger/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">XRP and the XRP Ledger</a>, has pursued exactly this use case. XRP and Ripple are separate entities, but Ripple’s work gives the G20 conversation practical context.
<h2 id="strong-the-infrastructure-race-strong">The Infrastructure Race</h2>
The 2026 G20 chair’s statement reaffirmed commitment to the cross-border payments roadmap. It called on countries to expand large-value payment system operating hours, encourage use of ISO 20022, and facilitate cross-border transmission of financial services data. The statement also recognized digital financial innovation and digital assets as part of the path forward.
The G20 is not selecting winners. It is defining a performance standard and creating pressure on payment infrastructure to meet it. Technologies capable of moving value quickly across borders become relevant in that environment. XRP is one of them.
