Bitcoin

A rotation is underway inside the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market. The hedge funds and macro traders that piled into Bitcoin ETFs when the carry trade was lucrative have pulled back sharply, and sovereign wealth funds from the Gulf have quietly moved in to fill part of that gap, according to a Galaxy Research report published October 26, 2026.

The shift matters because it changes the character of Bitcoin's institutional ownership base, not just its size. Fast money, by nature, exits quickly when returns compress. The patient capital now stepping in trades on a fundamentally different time horizon.
Why Fast Money Pulled Back From Bitcoin ETFs

"Fast money" in this context means short-horizon, tactical capital: multi-strategy hedge funds and macro funds that entered Bitcoin ETFs not as a directional long bet but to harvest the cash-and-carry premium between spot ETF prices and CME Bitcoin futures. When that premium shrinks, the trade loses its economic rationale, and the positions unwind.
According to Galaxy Research, thirteen-F reporting institutions held 355,000 BTC-equivalent in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs at September 30, 2025. By June 2026, that figure had declined to 307,000 BTC-equivalent, a drop of 14% across roughly 2,200 reporting filers.

The concentration of that selling is striking. Nine named firms, including Millennium, Brevan Howard, Goldman Sachs, Capula, Farallon, D. E. Shaw, Schonfeld, Symmetry, and Tudor, cut a combined 68,000 BTC-equivalent in aggregate, with individual reductions ranging from 29% to a full 100% exit. That single cohort accounted for more than the entire 48,000 BTC aggregate decline across all roughly 2,200 reporting filers, meaning other holders were net buyers over the same period.
The mechanics behind the selling come down to one number: the CME basis. Galaxy calculates that the front-month CME Bitcoin futures basis averaged 7.9% annualized in the 30 days leading up to Bitcoin's all-time high, sitting 3.9 percentage points above the three-month Treasury bill. That spread made the carry trade highly attractive. In the 30 days to October 21, 2026, the same basis had compressed to 4.8% annualized, only 0.6 percentage points above T-bills. Galaxy's Head of Firmwide Research Alex Thorn put it plainly: "That arithmetic is why the multi-strategy desks left."
The futures market tells the same story. Galaxy reports that CME asset managers' net long Bitcoin futures position fell from 43,300 BTC at the all-time-high week to 18,400 BTC, a 57% reduction. Leveraged funds' net short position fell by the same 57%, from 71,400 BTC to 30,600 BTC. Both sides of the carry trade shrank in lockstep as the premium evaporated, consistent with a deliberate unwind rather than a directional view on Bitcoin's price. This is a different dynamic from the ETF outflows seen before Fed decisions, which tend to be short-lived and macro-driven rather than structural basis unwinds.

Sovereign Funds Bring a Different Kind of Bitcoin Demand

While the fast-money cohort reduced, a different category of buyers emerged. Galaxy identifies Morgan Stanley's wealth management arm, Abu Dhabi's Mubadala, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Council among the institutions that added Bitcoin ETF exposure over the same period. This finding was independently confirmed by Decrypt's reporting on the same data.

The distinction between these buyer types matters. A sovereign wealth fund managing national reserves or long-term endowment capital does not exit because a three-month futures basis compresses by 300 basis points. Its investment committee operates on a horizon measured in years, not quarters, and its allocation decision reflects a strategic view on Bitcoin as a reserve asset or portfolio diversifier rather than a yield-extraction opportunity.

Non-filing advisers, family offices, and individuals, another category tracked in the Galaxy report, reduced their ETF holdings by only 6.6% during a period when Bitcoin's price fell 49%. That degree of holding discipline from a heterogeneous retail and family-office base suggests conviction buying that absorbed a significant portion of institutional selling pressure. For Southeast Asian investors following platforms like Indodax or Coins.ph, the signal here is that the retail and family-office base proved more resilient than the professional trading desks that ostensibly had deeper resources.

The ETF flows that have drawn attention in recent months, including the eight-day $2.8 billion inflow streak as Bitcoin tested $80,000, now take on additional meaning. Those inflows were occurring even as the basis-trade desks were reducing, implying the gross inflow picture was masking a meaningful ownership composition shift underneath.

What the Ownership Shift Means for Bitcoin ETFs Next

Bitcoin is trading near $81,094 at the time of publication, up roughly 0.56% in the past 24 hours, with the Crypto Fear and Greed Index sitting at 51, a neutral reading. The relatively subdued sentiment environment provides some context for why the basis has compressed: when price momentum is muted, arbitrage capital finds less reason to pay up for futures exposure, and the carry premium reflects that.

Galaxy's data covers 13F disclosures through June 2026, meaning it is a historical snapshot rather than a real-time ledger. The September quarter-end filings, due later this year, will reveal whether Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, and Morgan Stanley Wealth Management maintained or expanded their positions as Bitcoin moved through the $80,000 level. Those disclosures are the clearest confirmation signal available to track whether the sovereign rotation is durable.

The weekly and daily ETF net flow data offers a faster but noisier read. A sustained run of positive net flows, particularly in the context of flat or rising basis, would suggest new tactical capital returning. Persistent positive flows alongside a still-compressed basis would point more clearly toward strategic, longer-duration buyers dominating the marginal demand. Regional exchanges serving Southeast Asia's growing institutional client base, including Upbit's Korean operations and Singapore-based platforms, will likely watch these flows as a proxy for whether U.S. institutional momentum can support a price move that makes domestic Bitcoin products more attractive to local allocators.

The broader pattern of Bitcoin leaving exchanges adds one additional data point: supply that exits exchanges into ETF custody or cold storage is not available for quick sale. If sovereign and long-duration buyers are accumulating through ETFs while fast money exits, the net effect on available float could be more constructive than the headline 14% institutional decline implies. The next 13F filing cycle will be the clearest test of that thesis.
