The Fed Holds Rates Steady, Bitcoin Moves Higher

The Federal Open Market Committee announced on October 28 that it would leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged, according to the official Federal Reserve press release. The decision halted what had been an active rate-hiking cycle and gave risk markets, including crypto, an immediate catalyst to reprice.
Bitcoin responded with an upward move following the announcement. While specific price levels were not confirmed at the time of writing, the directional signal was consistent with how Bitcoin has historically behaved around Fed pivots, treating rate stability as a reduction in the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.
For context on how Bitcoin has navigated prior macro pressure points, the asset had previously been tested at key support levels, as covered when Bitcoin tested $80K as $550M in crypto liquidations hit earlier in the cycle. Wednesday's rebound represents a different dynamic, driven by policy clarity rather than forced selling.

What Warsh Said About the Pause

Chair Kevin Warsh took questions at the post-meeting press conference, where he explained the committee's reasoning. The press conference transcript documents his remarks in full. Warsh did not confirm the exact wording of any forward guidance at the time this article was filed, and no direct quotes have been independently verified from the transcript.

Based on the structure of the announcement, Warsh's explanation distinguished between pausing further rate increases and signaling an imminent pivot to cuts. A pause means the Fed is no longer tightening; it does not, in itself, mean the Fed is about to loosen. That distinction matters for digital asset markets, which have at times gotten ahead of actual policy shifts.

Traders and Bitcoin holders tracking this meeting had prepared for the Fed rate decision and its potential market impact in the lead-up to the announcement, with rate sensitivity emerging as a key variable in near-term price action.

Why a Rate Pause Can Lift Bitcoin

Bitcoin operates as a risk-on asset in most macro environments. When borrowing costs stop rising, liquidity conditions stabilize, and capital that had rotated into high-yield fixed income instruments becomes relatively less committed to staying there. That dynamic can benefit assets like Bitcoin, which carry no yield but offer asymmetric upside if macro headwinds ease.

The pause also affects sentiment in adjacent markets. Spot Bitcoin ETF flows, institutional positioning, and leveraged derivatives desks all recalibrate around Fed decisions. A rate hold removes one source of downward pressure on crypto valuations without necessarily triggering the more aggressive repricing that an outright cut would prompt.

The ETF layer adds another dimension. The SEC's ongoing engagement with leveraged Bitcoin ETF products means that institutional access vehicles are still being shaped at the regulatory level, and rate environment stability gives that buildout a more predictable backdrop.

What to Watch Next

The next FOMC meeting will be the next scheduled point at which the Fed could alter policy again. Between now and then, inflation data and labor market reports will inform whether Warsh's current pause holds or whether the committee faces renewed pressure to act. Bitcoin's sensitivity to those data releases is likely to remain elevated, given how directly the October 28 decision moved the asset.

For the digital asset market broadly, a stable rate environment does not resolve structural questions about liquidity or institutional demand, but it does remove a headwind that had weighed on valuations throughout the hiking cycle. Whether the rebound on October 28 marks a durable trend shift or a single-session reaction to a policy headline is something the on-chain data, exchange reserve levels, and derivatives open interest in the coming days will clarify.
