CryptoSlate reports the bank has added XRP custody services but only one deployment structure is currently available.

Bank of New York Mellon, one of the world's largest custodian banks, has reportedly added XRP to its digital asset custody offerings. The development was reported by CryptoSlate, which described the rollout as limited to a single structural model rather than a range of configurations.

Custody banks like BNY Mellon play a central role in traditional finance by safeguarding assets on behalf of institutional clients, including pension funds, asset managers and corporations. Over the past several years, BNY Mellon has gradually extended that role into digital assets, building infrastructure to hold cryptocurrencies alongside conventional securities. Adding XRP to that lineup would mark another step in that expansion.

According to the CryptoSlate report, the current offering exists in only one rollout form. That detail suggests the bank has not yet built out multiple access paths or product tiers for XRP custody, as it may have done or plans to do for other assets. The scope of that single configuration, including which clients can access it and under what conditions, was not detailed in the available reporting.

The significance of a major custodian bank supporting XRP custody extends beyond the token itself. Institutional custody is often viewed as a prerequisite for broader adoption of a digital asset by regulated entities. Without a trusted custodian, many institutional investors are unable to hold a cryptocurrency directly, regardless of their interest in it.

XRP has spent years navigating regulatory uncertainty in the United States, stemming from a lawsuit brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission against Ripple, the company closely associated with the token. That legal backdrop has shaped how traditional financial institutions have approached XRP, often with more caution than they have shown toward assets like Bitcoin or Ethereum.

A bank the size of BNY Mellon moving into XRP custody, even through a limited initial structure, could be read as a signal of shifting institutional comfort with the asset. At the same time, the narrow scope reported suggests the bank may be proceeding cautiously rather than launching a fully built-out product immediately.

It remains unclear from the available reporting whether BNY Mellon plans to expand the rollout to additional structures over time. Banks typically test new custody offerings with limited client groups before widening access. Details on the bank's broader roadmap for XRP custody, if one exists, have not been made public.

Readers should treat the scope of this offering as preliminary. Custody announcements from major banks often arrive in stages, with initial launches followed by later expansions, restrictions, or adjustments based on regulatory guidance and client demand.

Market Impact

Institutional custody support from a bank of BNY Mellon's standing can influence how asset managers and other regulated entities view XRP as a holdable asset. A single, narrow rollout type limits the immediate practical impact, since broader institutional adoption typically requires multiple access points and clearer onboarding pathways.

Any expansion of the custody offering, or clarification of its terms, would likely draw further attention from institutions evaluating XRP exposure. Market participants should watch for follow-up statements from BNY Mellon or additional reporting that clarifies the structure's availability and client eligibility.

The report signals a notable step for XRP custody within traditional finance, though the limited rollout structure described means its practical reach remains uncertain for now.
