Ripple has received final approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish Ripple National Trust Bank, but one XRP community member believes the bigger story goes well beyond RLUSD reserves.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse confirmed that the federally supervised trust bank will support RLUSD and provide digital asset custody services for enterprises.
The approved business plan allows Ripple National Trust Bank to manage segregated RLUSD reserves, act as collateral trustee for those reserves and offer fiduciary digital asset custody. RLUSD itself will continue to be issued by Ripple subsidiary Standard Custody & Trust Company.
XRP community member KT Baby argues that this structure could eventually give Ripple something more valuable: a regulated position between traditional financial institutions and tokenized assets.

The Bigger Theory Behind Ripple National Trust Bank

The community member describes a trust bank as infrastructure rather than a traditional lender.
That is broadly the right way to think about the charter. Ripple National Trust Bank is not being created as a conventional commercial bank taking deposits and making loans. Its approved role centers on fiduciary services, custody and reserve administration.
That could become useful as tokenized deposits, stablecoins and institutional digital assets move deeper into traditional finance.
Instead of Ripple merely providing software to financial institutions, the company will now have a federally supervised entity capable of performing regulated custody and trust functions itself.

My brain keeps asking the Why… Why did Ripple want to become a Trust bank? Why would Ripple want to become a trust bank. The surface answer is RLUSD reserves and custody. The real answer is structural. A trust bank is a pipe, not an owner. Ripple Inc. can now move client assets through RNTB without those liabilities sitting on its own balance sheet. That is exactly how SWIFT, DTCC, and central bank settlement systems are built. They are intermediaries that touch value without owning it. If the world shifts toward tokenized deposits and cross-border rails that need a neutral, regulated middle layer, Ripple is now the one US entity that can legally be that layer without becoming a bank holding company. The quieter implication is that it gives the OCC and Treasury a domestic champion in the same space where BRICS is trying to build its own rails. Circle already took the first step with its July 2026 charter. Coinbase is still at conditional approval. Ripple leapfrogged both by bundling stablecoin reserve management with collateral trustee duties and enterprise custody under one federal roof. For XRP itself, the angle is supply. If institutions start parking large holdings in RNTB custody accounts, coins leave the liquid float and sit in longer term holds, the same mechanism ETF inflows use, just slower and aimed at a different buyer. The charter does not mention XRP once, which is deliberate. It keeps the regulatory story clean and lets the token’s utility emerge through adoption rather than through the paperwork. The endgame is not replacing the old system. It is becoming the regulated on ramp the old system cannot ignore.— KT Baby (@KTKetoGang) October 27, 2026

This fits Garlinghouse’s own framing that crypto and banks “work better together.” Ripple has spent years trying to connect blockchain infrastructure with existing financial institutions rather than build an entirely separate financial system.
The community member goes further, arguing that Ripple could eventually become a neutral regulated layer through which institutions move tokenized assets.
That is an interesting interpretation, but it goes beyond what the OCC approval itself says. The charter authorizes specific trust and custody activities. It does not designate Ripple as a new SWIFT, DTCC or central-bank settlement layer.

This is where the theory becomes more speculative.
KT Baby argues that institutional custody through Ripple National Trust Bank could eventually remove XRP from liquid circulation if enterprises begin holding large XRP positions there for longer periods.
In theory, that mechanism makes sense.
If institutional buyers purchase XRP and place it into long-term custody, those tokens are less available to trade. Lower liquid supply combined with rising demand can help price.
But there is an important missing step.
Ripple’s announcement does not say institutions will custody XRP through RNTB, and the OCC approval does not mention XRP as part of the bank’s approved use cases. The confirmed activities are RLUSD reserve administration, collateral trustee services and fiduciary digital asset custody.
That means any XRP supply effect depends on future institutional adoption rather than the charter itself.
I actually think this distinction makes the story more interesting.
Ripple does not need XRP written into the charter for XRP to benefit eventually. If the company succeeds in bringing more institutions into its payments, custody and tokenization ecosystem, XRP could gain utility through products built around that infrastructure.
But that has to happen in practice.

The post also argues that Ripple has leapfrogged Circle and Coinbase.
That comparison is only partly accurate.
Coinbase National Trust Company received preliminary conditional OCC approval in April 2026, so Ripple is currently further along in that process.
Circle, however, already received final OCC approval for Circle National Trust on July 10, 2026. Its federally regulated trust bank is designed to provide institutional custody and support USDC infrastructure.
So Ripple is not the only U.S. crypto company with this type of federal trust-bank structure.
What is notable is the combination Ripple is building under one ecosystem: RLUSD reserve infrastructure, institutional custody, payments, tokenization and capital-markets products.
That is the part I would watch.
The immediate news is regulatory.
The potentially bigger story is whether Ripple can turn that regulatory position into institutional adoption.
If institutions eventually use Ripple’s federally supervised infrastructure to custody and move XRP at scale, then the supply argument raised by the community could become relevant.
For now, though, that is the next chapter of the thesis, not something the OCC approval has already delivered.
