Chainlink is a <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/chainlink-oracle-network-how-smart-contracts-get-data" style="font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255)" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">blockchain oracle network</a>; it brings outside data to smart contracts. Chainlink CustodySync is a tool built with Chainlink products; it links custody collateral with DeFi lending.&nbsp;
This guide explains both in plain words. You will see how held assets and on-chain loans can connect.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-is-chainlink-custodysync-span-span">What Is Chainlink CustodySync?</h2>
Chainlink CustodySync lets a qualified custodian offer DeFi lending to its institutional clients. The assets stay with the custodian the whole time.&nbsp;
Chainlink shared this in its <a href="https://chain.link/blog/introducing-chainlink-custodysync" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">official announcement</a> on October 26, 2026; the idea is simple. The asset stays where it is; a token that stands for it acts as collateral; that token backs a loan on an on-chain lending market.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-key-takeaways-span-span">Key takeaways&nbsp;</h2>
<ul>
 <li>Chainlink CustodySync lets qualified custodians offer institutional clients DeFi lending access while assets stay in custody.</li>
 <li>Anchorage Digital Bank is the launch partner.</li>
 <li>The announcement does not list supported collateral assets or lending markets.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-is-chainlink-a-short-background-for-crypto-readers-span-span">What Is Chainlink? A Short Background for Crypto Readers</h2>
Chainlink is an oracle network. An oracle is a service; it brings outside data, like asset prices, onto a blockchain. <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/chainlink-smart-contract-security-data-reliability" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">A smart contract</a> can’t fetch this data by itself; it needs an oracle for that.
Chainlink offers a few tools for the job; these include data feeds, data streams, and proof of reserve. CustodySync puts them together in one flow; that flow serves custodians and lending markets.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-why-custody-collateral-in-defi-has-been-hard-for-institutions-span-span">Why Custody Collateral in DeFi Has Been Hard for Institutions</h2>
In a standard DeFi loan, the borrower puts collateral into a smart contract. That moves the asset away from the custodian; many institutions can’t do that. Their internal controls, audits, and risk rules forbid it; assets must stay with a qualified custodian.
So a large pool of held crypto has had no easy path into <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/chainlink-news-custodysync-institutional-defi-lending" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">on-chain lending</a>.
Chainlink estimates that about $700 billion in digital assets sits in custody. It also estimates that DeFi lending markets hold more than $80 billion in deposits. These are Chainlink’s own estimates; they show the size of the gap. This product aims to close it.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-chainlink-custodysync-works-step-by-step-span-span">How Chainlink CustodySync Works Step by Step</h2>
The design links two separate systems; one is the custodian’s record of heldassets, and the other is an on-chain lending market. It works in four steps.
<ul>
 <li>Deposit: The institution places collateral with its qualified custodian. The custodian’s system stays the source of truth for balances.</li>
 <li>Proof:The custodian’s balance goes on-chain through Chainlink Proof of Reserve. That gives you a public record; anyone can verify it.</li>
 <li>Receipt: On the lending market, a receipt token serves as the collateral. You can’t move it around freely; it simply represents the assets sitting with the custodian.</li>
 <li>Pricing and liquidation: The custodian and the lending market use the same Chainlink price data. They use it to work out loan-to-value; if a liquidation threshold is hit, a named <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/crypto-as-collateral-guide-loans-ltv-risks-explained" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">collateral agent</a> sells the collateral.</li>
</ul>
This keeps both systems in line. It does so for the whole life of a loan, from the first deposit to repayment or sale.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-why-proof-of-reserve-and-shared-price-data-matter-span-span">Why Proof of Reserve and Shared Price Data Matter</h2>
Two parts of the design do most of the work.
The first is Proof of Reserve; it lets anyone check the custody balance on-chain. The DeFiplatform doesn’t have to trust a claim alone.
The second is shared price data; the custodian and the lending market use the same Chainlink prices. So both sides see the same loan value at the same time; that helps avoid fights over numbers when markets move fast.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-anchorage-digital-and-qualified-custody-in-defi-lending-span-span">Anchorage Digital and Qualified Custody in DeFi Lending</h2>
Anchorage Digital Bank is the launch partner; it is a U.S. federally chartered digital asset bank. Its services are described on the official Anchorage Digital website.
Anchorage provides the custody and asset management layer, so its clients can reach <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/defi-lending-platforms-compared-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">DeFi lending markets</a>. They don’t have to put collateral into a smart contract.
The announcement says more custodians and lending markets may join later. No names or dates have been shared yet.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-standard-defi-loan-vs-chainlink-custodysync-model-span-span">Standard DeFi Loan vs. Chainlink CustodySync Model</h2>
<img alt="Chainlink CustodySync flow from custodian to DeFi lending market." src="https://d3iuzwoiyg9qa8.cloudfront.net/webadmin/storage/public/commonEditerImage/9rAJBzDXZ4UR5pKxNqTXcUOXCK2I7LGJam2n4OWg.png" width="616" height="219" title="Chainlink CustodySync flow from custodian to DeFi lending market.">
In this analysis, the model swaps part of the smart contract risk for more reliance on custodian and agent processes. The trade-off shifts; it does not disappear.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-illustrative-example-how-an-institution-might-use-custody-collateral-span-span">Illustrative Example: How an Institution Might Use Custody Collateral</h2>
This case is hypothetical; it is not an announced deployment.
Assume a fund holds a supported digital asset at a qualified custodian; the fund wants a stablecoin loan, and it keeps the asset in custody. The balance goes onchain, and a receipt token serves as collateral.
Now say the asset price falls toward the <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/avoid-crypto-liquidation-risk-management-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">liquidation threshold</a>; the shared price data shows the drop in both systems at once. If the limit is crossed, the collateral agent starts a sale. This shows why good price data matters; it also shows why a fast agent matters.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-risks-and-limits-of-custody-collateral-in-defi-span-span">Risks and Limits of Custody Collateral in DeFi</h2>
Keeping assets in custody cuts some risk. It does not remove these risks.
<ul>
 <li>Smart contract risk: The lending market’s code can still have bugs.</li>
 <li>Oracle risk:A bad price feed means the loan gets valued wrong.</li>
 <li>Counterparty risk: Custodians and agents have to do their job, or the setup breaks down.</li>
 <li>Operational risk:When the two systems drift apart, even a simple action can get stuck.</li>
 <li>Liquidation risk: Forced sales don’t always clear at the price you were counting on.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-who-could-use-chainlink-custodysync-a-simple-decision-framework-span-span">Who Could Use Chainlink CustodySync? A Simple Decision Framework</h2>
Three groups are the natural fit.
<ul>
 <li>Custodians may use it to offer DeFi access. They can do so with controls they already run.</li>
 <li>Institutions with assets at a qualified custodian may use it to seek <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/hyperliquid-liquidity-model-how-markets-stay-active" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">on-chain liquidity</a>. They don’t have to move those assets.</li>
 <li>Lending markets may use it to get checkable collateral data and a steady risk setup.</li>
</ul>
Retail users are not the target. The tool is built for institutional clients of qualified custodians.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-glossary-key-terms-in-custody-collateral-span-span">Glossary: Key Terms in Custody Collateral</h2>
<ul>
 <li>Qualified custodian: A regulated firm that holds assets for clients.</li>
 <li>Proof of Reserve: A <a href="https://chain.link/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Chainlink service</a> that publishes balances on-chain, open for anyone to check.</li>
 <li>Receipt token: A token standing in for assets that are held somewhere else.</li>
 <li>LTV:It is a short term for loan-to-value; it is the size of the loan compared with what the collateral is worth.</li>
 <li>Collateral agent:The party that runs a liquidation sale.</li>
</ul>

Chainlink CustodySync offers a way for institutions to borrow in DeFi; a qualified custodian keeps the assets. The tool uses proof of reserve, receipt tokens, and shared price data.
The open questions are the supported assets, the DeFiplatforms, and the timeline. This guide will be updated when Chainlink or Anchorage Digital share those details.
