SoFi Technologies reported record third-quarter revenue of $1.39 billion and net income of $241 million on October 27, as stronger consumer lending, deposit growth and fee income helped offset weakness in its technology business.

Revenue increased 44% from a year earlier, while net income rose 73%. Diluted earnings reached $0.18 per share, compared with analysts’ expectations of approximately $0.17.

The results prompted SoFi to raise its full-year financial outlook and introduce a preliminary 2027 forecast. Shares gained approximately 9% in premarket trading following the announcement, according to Reuters.

Yet the headline figures conceal an uneven performance across SoFi’s businesses. Lending and financial services are expanding rapidly, while its technology platform continues to absorb the effects of a major client departure.

The company’s third-quarter financial disclosures also reveal how much of its growth now depends on deposit-funded lending and fee-generating loan originations.

SoFi’s Deposit Advantage Is Supporting Lending Margins

SoFi ended September with $51.3 billion in deposits, an increase of $5.8 billion during the quarter.

That expansion helped support net interest income of $929.5 million, up 59% year over year. Net interest margin reached 6.14%, improving 16 basis points from the previous quarter.

The underlying advantage comes from funding costs.

SoFi reported that its average deposit interest rate was 145 basis points below the cost of comparable warehouse financing arrangements. Management estimated that its deposit-funded structure generates approximately $745 million in annualized interest expense savings.

That figure represents an estimated annual funding benefit, not quarterly earnings or additional cash revenue.

For a lender, cheaper funding improves the spread between interest earned on loans and interest paid to finance them. It can also provide flexibility when competition forces companies to offer lower borrowing rates.

However, SoFi’s advantage depends partly on interest-rate conditions.

If the Federal Reserve reduces policy rates, deposit costs and lending yields may decline at different speeds. The effect on net interest margin will depend on loan repricing, deposit competition and the company’s asset-liability structure.

Falling rates could also encourage refinancing and increase loan demand, creating opportunities for additional originations.

Investors should therefore avoid assuming that lower benchmark rates will automatically improve SoFi’s profitability.

Loan Originations Are Growing Faster Than the Balance Sheet

Total loan originations reached approximately $16.9 billion during the quarter, an increase of 71% year over year.

Personal loans represented $12.6 billion, while student loan originations reached $2.9 billion and home loan originations totaled approximately $1.4 billion.

The expansion reflects both consumer borrowing demand and SoFi’s growing use of third-party loan buyers.

Its Loan Platform Business generated approximately $3.8 billion in originations during the quarter.

Unlike loans retained on SoFi’s balance sheet, loans originated for third-party buyers can produce fee income without requiring the company to fund and hold the entire exposure through maturity.

This allows SoFi to expand origination activity while limiting the corresponding growth in retained credit assets.

The model does not eliminate risk. Revenue depends on continued demand from institutional loan buyers, while underwriting quality and contractual obligations remain important.

SoFi’s personal-loan annualized net charge-off ratio declined to 2.26%, compared with 2.60% a year earlier.

The improvement suggests that credit losses remained manageable during the quarter. Nevertheless, the performance of newly originated loans will become clearer as those borrowers move further into their repayment periods.

Lending uses adjusted revenue; the other segments use reported net revenue. Figures are not directly additive to consolidated adjusted revenue.

Financial Services benefited from growing customer activity across banking, investing and other products.

The Technology Platform division moved in the opposite direction.

Revenue declined 24% to $87.4 million following the departure of a major customer that completed its transition away from the platform before the end of 2025.

SoFi said technology revenue would have increased 18% excluding that customer’s impact.

The adjustment provides context, but it does not reverse the reported decline.

Technology Platform contribution profit fell 56% to $14.2 million, while its contribution margin narrowed to 16% from 28%.

Platform-enabled accounts also declined 11% year over year to approximately 140 million.

The results illustrate a weakness in SoFi’s business-to-business operations: losing a large institutional client can materially affect revenue and profitability even when the remaining customer base continues expanding.

The division must demonstrate that new customers and transaction volumes can replace the lost business.

Crypto Adoption Is Growing, but Retained Revenue Remains Small

SoFi’s cryptocurrency business provides another example of why transaction volume and customer adoption should not be confused with profitability.

The company reported 503,070 crypto products at the end of September, following the relaunch of its cryptocurrency investing service in late 2025.

Gross crypto transaction revenue reached $161.6 million during the third quarter.

However, directly associated crypto transaction costs totaled approximately $160.0 million, leaving $1.63 million in net crypto transaction revenue.

That produces two distinct measurements:

Net crypto transaction revenue represented approximately 1.0% of gross crypto transaction revenue.

The same $1.63 million accounted for approximately 0.12% of SoFi’s consolidated quarterly revenue.

Neither figure is a net profit margin, because the calculation does not incorporate all operating expenses attributable to the crypto business.

Across the first nine months of 2026, SoFi recorded approximately $3.67 million in net crypto transaction revenue.

The numbers indicate that cryptocurrency activity is attracting customers but remains a small direct contributor to reported revenue.

Its broader economic value could emerge through cross-selling.

Customers who initially use SoFi for cryptocurrency investing may subsequently adopt banking, lending or other financial products.

That possibility fits SoFi’s wider strategy of increasing the number of products used by each member. However, the company does not separately disclose enough information to calculate the incremental banking or lending revenue generated specifically by crypto customers.

Until those economics become clearer, crypto adoption should be assessed as a customer-engagement indicator rather than evidence of a major new profit center.

SoFi’s 2027 Outlook Requires More Than Revenue Growth

Management raised its 2026 adjusted net revenue forecast to approximately $5.04 billion, representing around 40% annual growth.

The company also expects adjusted EBITDA of $1.66 billion, net income of approximately $840 million and earnings per share of $0.61.

Its preliminary 2027 outlook calls for $6.4 billion in adjusted revenue, $2.24 billion in adjusted EBITDA and earnings of $0.90 per share.

Those projections imply a further expansion in profitability.

Based on the company’s guidance, adjusted EBITDA margin would increase from approximately 32.9% in 2026 to 35.0% in 2027.

That is an improvement of roughly 2.1 percentage points.

The forecast therefore assumes that SoFi will not simply generate more revenue. It must also convert a larger proportion of that revenue into operating earnings.

There is another useful calculation.

SoFi generated $3.66 billion in adjusted revenue during the first nine months of 2026. To reach its full-year forecast, the company needs approximately $1.38 billion in fourth-quarter adjusted revenue.

That is only slightly above the $1.37 billion reported for the third quarter.

The 2026 revenue target therefore appears achievable without another major sequential acceleration, assuming current business conditions remain broadly stable.

The more demanding test is 2027, when management expects approximately 27% revenue growth from a substantially larger base.

Three Figures Investors Should Examine in Q4

SoFi’s next earnings report will help establish whether the third-quarter performance represents a sustainable operating trend.

First, net interest margin. The 6.14% margin reflects a favorable funding structure, but deposit repricing and changing loan yields could alter that advantage.

Second, credit losses. Personal-loan charge-offs declined during the quarter, yet the rapid expansion in originations means future credit performance deserves close attention.

Third, Technology Platform contribution profit. Revenue growth excluding the departed client is encouraging, but investors need evidence that the division can rebuild profitability.

These measures are more informative than headline member growth alone.

SoFi ended the quarter with 17.1 million members and 26.7 million products, representing annual increases of 35% and 44%, respectively.

The expanding customer base provides opportunities for additional revenue, but the financial return depends on how effectively SoFi converts that activity into profitable banking, lending and technology services.

Its latest results show substantial progress in the first two areas. The technology division and crypto transaction economics remain less developed.

With management now projecting higher margins in 2027, the company’s next challenge is demonstrating that its earnings growth can continue without relying on increasingly favorable funding conditions.
