Arkham Intelligence has drawn attention to the UTXO model as a key part of Satoshi Nakamoto's legacy. The system tracks funds as separate spendable outputs rather than account balances, and it underpins Bitcoin ($BTC) as well as several other major networks.

The term is missing from the whitepaper

Despite being central to Bitcoin's architecture, the term UTXO does not appear anywhere in the Bitcoin whitepaper, published in October 2008, according to Arkham's research. The phrase emerged later among developers between 2011 and 2012 as shorthand for a concept the whitepaper describes.

The clearest description sits in Section 9, titled "Combining and Splitting Value". The paper says that to allow value to be split and combined, transactions contain multiple inputs and outputs, normally with at most two outputs: one for the payment and one returning change to the sender. Arkham notes that rather than tracking a running total in an account, a UTXO-based blockchain tracks individual units of unspent value, each controlled by whoever holds the corresponding private key.

The design also differs from account-based networks. One technical guide notes that the model distinguishes Bitcoin from account-based systems like Ethereum.

Litecoin (@litecoin) $LTC, Dogecoin (@dogecoin) $DOGE, Zcash (@Zcash) $ZEC and Bitcoin Cash $BCH all use the accounting system.

Cardano (@Cardano) $ADA runs a modified version designed to support smart contracts. According to Cardano's developer documentation, the Extended UTXO model adds datums, redeemers and script context to Bitcoin's original UTXO concept. The same documentation says the extended model was introduced by the Alonzo upgrade to support multi-assets and smart contracts.

For developers, the practical appeal is predictability. Cardano's documentation says the approach makes transactions deterministic, so you know exactly what will happen before you submit a transaction.

The UTXO structure remains one of the less visible parts of Bitcoin's original design, even as it continues to shape how multiple blockchains record ownership and process payments.
