GraniteShares ETF Trust has filed a Form 485BXT with the SEC, pushing back the effective date for its leveraged XRP ETFs to November 30, 2026, in a move the filing itself describes as having a single purpose: delay. The filing covers the GraniteShares 3x Long XRP Daily ETF and GraniteShares 3x Short XRP Daily ETF, alongside comparable leveraged products tied to Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana. With the U.S. midterm elections falling just days before that new deadline, the timing has drawn scrutiny, though the official record contains no election-related rationale.

What the SEC Filing Actually Says

On October 26, 2026, GraniteShares ETF Trust submitted Form 485BXT to the SEC, a post-effective amendment under Rule 485(b) that selects a new effective date for a prior registration amendment. The filing is terse by design: its stated sole purpose is to delay the effectiveness of a previously filed post-effective amendment until November 30, 2026. William Rhind, president of GraniteShares ETF Trust, signed the filing on the same date it was submitted.
A Rule 485(b) amendment is a procedural mechanism that allows a fund issuer to push back the effective date of a registration update without triggering a full SEC review. This is not an SEC denial, approval, or adjudicative order. The regulator has not blocked the product; the issuer has voluntarily deferred its own timeline. That distinction matters when interpreting media framing around these products.

The affected registration covers four product pairs in total: the 3x Long and 3x Short daily-leveraged ETFs for XRP, Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana. GraniteShares has been navigating a layered SEC review process for XRP-linked ETF structures, with earlier filings already testing the boundaries of leveraged digital asset exposure under current registration frameworks.

The Mechanics Behind a Rule 485(b) Delay

Under Rule 485(b) of the Investment Company Act, a fund can file a post-effective amendment that becomes automatically effective within a set window, typically 60 days, without needing active SEC sign-off. A Form 485BXT is the specific variant that extends or resets that effective date. The issuer picks the new date unilaterally, subject to the rule's ceiling.

What this means practically: GraniteShares is not waiting on an SEC decision. It is choosing not to go effective yet. The regulatory record does not explain why. Issuers file 485BXT amendments for a range of operational reasons, including updating prospectus disclosures, aligning internal distribution timelines, or awaiting market structure conditions. None of those explanations appear in the filed document.

The broader context for leveraged crypto ETFs is relevant here. Leveraged daily-reset products that track volatile assets carry specific disclosure requirements around compounding effects and decay. A 3x leveraged XRP ETF, for instance, would be expected to diverge substantially from three times XRP's performance over any period longer than a single trading session. Getting those disclosures right is a known source of delay for issuers in this space. The SEC has also recently delayed decisions on other altcoin ETF proposals, reflecting a cautious posture on newer digital asset structures.

Could the Midterm Election Be Shaping the Timeline?

The November 30 effective date lands roughly three weeks after the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November 3, 2026. That proximity has led some observers to ask whether political calendar considerations are influencing the timing, either within the SEC or at the issuer level. The short answer from the official record: there is no documented causal link.

The GraniteShares 485BXT filing contains zero references to elections, political conditions, or regulatory policy uncertainty. The SEC itself has not issued any statement linking its crypto ETF pipeline to the midterm cycle. Treating the date overlap as causal rather than coincidental requires evidence that does not currently exist in the public record. Any connection between the amended effective date and election timing should be treated as unsubstantiated speculation, not established fact.

That said, the broader regulatory environment for crypto ETFs has been shaped by political transitions before. Commission composition, enforcement posture, and approval velocity have all shifted alongside changes in administration and congressional priorities. The SEC's earlier delays on Ethereum ETF proposals also occurred during periods of political flux, though no filing in those cases cited political timing as a driver either.

What the election could plausibly affect, without proof it has, is the SEC's internal bandwidth and agenda-setting. Periods around federal elections sometimes coincide with deferred rulemaking and reduced commission activity as personnel transitions are anticipated. But that is structural context, not a documented cause for this specific filing.

XRP Market Context

At the time of the filing, XRP was trading at $1.30, up 1.23% over the prior 24 hours, with a market cap of approximately $82.2 billion and 24-hour volume near $1.35 billion. The broader crypto market sentiment registered a Fear and Greed score of 48, placing it in neutral territory. Neither data point explains the amendment's timing, and the filing makes no reference to market conditions.

For traders interested in the leveraged products themselves, the November 30 effective date is the next concrete catalyst. If GraniteShares proceeds on that schedule, both the 3x Long and 3x Short XRP ETFs could become active instruments before year-end. The XRP price trajectory has already been shaped by prior regulatory uncertainty, and the introduction of leveraged daily-reset ETF exposure would represent a meaningful structural addition to the U.S. listed product set.

The November 30 deadline is issuer-set, not regulator-imposed. GraniteShares can file another 485BXT to push the date further if conditions warrant, or allow the amendment to go effective as scheduled. The SEC could also object to specific disclosures through a separate comment process, though no such proceeding has been reported. The product landscape for leveraged altcoin ETFs remains contingent on that November date holding, and on no new procedural filings intervening before then.
