On the record: Bitcoin stands at $80,283 at midday on Monday, October opened at $83,576, and $3,293 to the upside are missing with the month closing on Saturday. Our own reading follows further down: the arguments for and against a green monthly balance sit in the editorial assessment section.

October 31 is a Saturday. That sounds like a side note, but it settles which closing price the month enters into every statistic investors will read in November. Where the price can point on a horizon of months is set out in our Bitcoin price prediction. This article answers the narrower question: what would have to happen in the five remaining trading days for October not to end as a losing month.

Where things stand: $80,283 and 3.9 percent from the monthly open

Bitcoin trades at $80,283 at midday on Monday. CoinMarketCap shows $80,103 at the same hour, so the spread between the two data sources runs to roughly $180. Over the past 24 hours the price moved between $79,332 and $80,825, a daily range of 1.88 percent. It is down 3.0 percent on the week and 4.7 percent on the month.

October opened on October 1 at $83,576. That sets the gap at issue over the coming five days: 3.9 percent below the monthly open. For the month to close positive it takes a rise of 4.1 percent, measured from the current level. That is no large move for Bitcoin, but this October has not shown it on a single day.

For a sense of scale: the monthly high came on October 5 at $86,490, which the price is 7.2 percent away from. The monthly low is from today and sits at $80,049. The all-time high of $126,080, set on October 6, 2025, is 36.3 percent above the current price.

Why October 31 is a cut-off date for Bitcoin

A month's close is not market mechanics but an accounting boundary. Funds close their monthly reports at it, asset managers measure the performance they report to clients against it, and it ends the period that financial media sum up as the monthly balance. The price itself knows nothing of this. The reports that come out of it, though, shape perception in the following weeks.

There is also a quirk to this month. When the last calendar day falls on a weekend, the month's close lands in a phase of thin trading. Crypto exchanges trade around the clock, but volume on Saturday and Sunday comes out markedly lower than on weekdays, because institutional desks are shut. In thin books, smaller orders move the price further. Anyone speculating on a particular closing price therefore has to reckon with wider swings in both directions.

In practice that means the real decision falls by Friday evening. Whatever still happens on Saturday happens in a market where a single larger sale moves more in percentage terms than on Wednesday.

The monthly candle: how a price level becomes a balance

A monthly candle is the summary of all price moves of a calendar month in four values: open, high, low and close. That definition is why a single price level on the last day carries so much weight. Everything that happened between October 2 and October 30 disappears into two numbers, the high and the low mark. What remains is the difference between open and close.

For October 2026 the open is already fixed at $83,576. That price is therefore the zero line, above which the month ends positive and below which it ends negative. The level is not derived from a chart pattern and not from an average; it is simply the first traded price of the month. That is exactly what makes it more solid than most of the levels discussed in price analysis.

One point for context: a red monthly candle says nothing about where the price goes in November. The candle describes what was. Its influence arises indirectly, through reports, through automated market commentary and through the chart pictures investors have in front of them afterwards.

What has changed since Sunday's mining difficulty piece

In our Bitcoin price prediction from Sunday, the mining difficulty adjustment due on Thursday was the centrepiece. The price stood at $80,853 then. Since then $570 have drained away, which is 0.7 percent. The $80,000 level has held over that stretch, but more narrowly than before: today's low at $80,049 sits only $49 above it.

What has mainly been added since is the time axis. On Sunday there were still six days to the month's close, now there are five, and the biggest event of the week sits in between. Four consecutive days with a lower level each, counted from October 23, have widened the gap to the monthly open from 3.3 to 3.9 percent over that stretch.

The mining difficulty itself remains a factor for miners' cost side, not for the month's closing price. Anyone thinking the two themes together should mind the order: first comes the rate decision on Wednesday, then the adjustment on Thursday, then the month's close on Saturday.

Three levels until Saturday: $79,332, $80,825 and $83,576

The first level to the downside is today's daily low at $79,332. It is at once the lowest level of the month and sits just under the round $80,000 threshold. If the price turns up there again, that confirms the zone as October's floor. If it drops below, the rest of September is all that lies between it and the next grounded catch mark.

The second level is the daily high at $80,825. It marks how far buyers could carry the price over the past 24 hours. Only a daily close above it shows that the run of four weaker days is broken. Before that, every recovery inside the 1.88 percent daily range is noise.

The third level is the month's open at $83,576. This level is neither resistance nor support in the chart sense, but the arithmetic figure on which the monthly balance turns. Between the daily high and this level lie $2,751, which is 3.4 percent. That is the distance the price would have to cover in five days.

The calendar beside the chart: Fed Wednesday and a thin weekend

Looking only at the chart misses the single largest factor of this week. The Fed meeting calendar lists a meeting of the Open Market Committee for October 27 and 28, so the decision lands on Wednesday. Rate decisions act on Bitcoin not through the blockchain but through the dollar and through large investors' willingness to hold risk.

The mechanism takes two sentences. If the central bank cuts the policy rate or signals a cut, the yield on safe assets falls and capital looks for returns in riskier markets. If it holds its course or sounds more restrictive than expected, the opposite happens, and crypto is regularly among the first positions to be trimmed.

For the monthly balance that gives a clear structure in time. By Wednesday evening the direction of the week is settled. Thursday and Friday remain to extend the move. Saturday is then the thinnest trading day of the week and is no longer fit for closing a gap of several percent.

Sentiment turns neutral: the index reads 50

The Fear and Greed Index from alternative.me reads 50 points on Monday, exactly the middle of the scale, classified as neutral. The day before it was 54 points. The index condenses volatility, trading volume, market dominance and survey readings into a single number between 0 and 100.

What is notable about this reading is what it does not show. With the price 36.3 percent below the all-time high and four weaker days in a row, a slide into the fear range would have been the obvious outcome. Instead sentiment stays in the middle. That suggests the move of recent days is read as orderly selling rather than panic.

For investors that means market sentiment offers no signal in either direction this week. Anyone weighing an entry finds neither the downside excess that has historically marked favourable moments, nor the euphoria that rewards caution.

Every tranche has a clock of its own: the one-year holding period starts on the purchase date, not at the turn of the year.

The editorial assessment: what argues for and against a green balance

From the editorial side, a positive October balance is possible but not the more likely case. The scale argues for it: Bitcoin has managed 4.1 percent in five days often enough, and Wednesday's rate decision is the kind of event that regularly sets off such moves. Against it stand the direction of the past four days, the fact that the price set its monthly low this Monday, and the position of the month's close on a Saturday with thin trading.

The evidence sits above: monthly open $83,576, current level $80,283, monthly low $80,049 from today, central bank meeting on October 28 per the meeting calendar. What argues against can be quantified; what argues for cannot, because nobody knows the outcome of the meeting. So this remains a weighting and not a forecast with a target price. No recommendation to buy or sell is attached to it.

How to check your cost basis before the turn of the year

Whatever October does, a clock is running for German investors that has nothing to do with the month's close. Gains from selling crypto assets are tax-free after a holding period of one year, and that period runs separately for each individual tranche. Anyone who bought in October or November 2025 is reaching it right about now.

In practice you need three details per purchase: the date, the quantity and the price. From those it follows which tranche already has the one-year period behind it and which does not. If you lack that data, your exchange supplies it as a transaction history, usually as a file to download. The matching is handled by tax tools with a portfolio tracker, which carry the holding period and acquisition cost per tranche.

Two points count especially here. First, the period runs to the day and not by calendar year, so a purchase from November 12, 2025 can be sold tax-free on November 13, 2026. Second, the order is governed by the cost-flow method in your records, which is why a clean statement is worth more than any price forecast.

Custody: why a quiet month is a good moment

A market without large swings is the best moment to handle the things that get left aside when it moves hard. That includes the question of where your Bitcoin actually sit. Holdings on an exchange are a claim against the company; holdings in a self-custodied wallet are not.

The difference only becomes visible when it matters, and by then it is too late to change the setup. Anyone holding larger amounts with everything on the trading platform so far will find the devices, with prices and supported coins, in our comparison of hardware wallets. The move itself takes a few minutes with Bitcoin and costs the network fee of one transaction.

October balance: below $83,576 the month stays red

October turns on a single number, and that number has been fixed since October 1. Three steps make sense before Saturday:

Note the level, do not follow the price. $83,576 is the line above which the month ends positive. Everything between $79,332 and $80,825 is daily noise. Anyone looking to trade needs a plan for both directions, and a venue that suits their order size. The terms are set out in the comparison of the best crypto exchanges, with fees by order size.

Wait for Wednesday. Before the central bank decision on October 28, the direction of the week is open. Betting on either side now is a bet on an outcome nobody knows yet. Where the announced change to the holding period stands is tracked in our status of the holding-period reform.

Draw up the holding periods. Gather date, quantity and price for every tranche and see which has reached the one-year mark. The portfolio trackers with a tax function help with that, reading in your exchange history.
