Greed

Ethereum

The Fear and Greed Index is a sentiment gauge for the crypto market. It condenses several sets of market data into a single number between 0 and 100: the lower the reading, the more fearfully investors behave; the higher, the greedier. On October 25, 2026, the best known of these indices stood at 54 points, which puts it in neutral territory.

Those 54 points are a good example of what the index does and does not do. On October 22 it still read 68, well into greed territory, and it fell to 50 within a day. Prices themselves moved far less in the same week: our market review of October 25, 2026 found losses of up to four percent across the largest coins. Eighteen index points of movement against four percent of price movement: the index measures sentiment, not price. The current reading and its history are available any time on our Fear and Greed Index chart page.

Fear and Greed Index: what the fear gauge measures and what it leaves out

Fear and Greed Index: a composite sentiment indicator that weights several crypto market metrics and computes them into a value from 0 to 100. It describes how investors are behaving right now and makes no statement about what a coin is worth.

The idea comes from the equity market, where a comparable index has been published for years. The thinking behind it: at turning points, markets often behave uniformly. When almost everyone sells because almost everyone is afraid, the selling pressure is eventually spent. When almost everyone buys because the price is rising, the buyers eventually run out.

What the index expressly does not contain is any form of valuation. It knows nothing about network usage, profits, supply volumes or regulation. Two markets with the same index reading can be valued entirely differently. Reading the index as a price target is reading it wrong.

The scale from zero to one hundred: from Extreme Fear to Extreme Greed

The best known provider divides the range into five steps. Readings from 0 to 24 count as Extreme Fear. From 25 to 49 the label is Fear. The band around 50 is Neutral. From about 55 to 74 it reads Greed, above that Extreme Greed.

These boundaries are set, not measured. A reading of 49 and a reading of 51 are two points apart arithmetically but carry two different labels. For your own assessment, what counts is the number and its direction over several days, not the word above it.

October's readings show that clearly. Between October 18 and October 25, 2026, the index travelled through three labels: 53 neutral, then several days in greed territory with a high of 68, then back to 50 and 51, and 54 again on October 25. One week, four changes of description, and the market situation itself stayed the same.

The components: volatility, market momentum and search queries in the index

The index is a calculation from several ingredients, and their weighting explains much about its quirks. At alternative.me, whose readings are the most widely circulated, the inputs include the volatility of prices, the ratio of market momentum to trading volume, activity on social networks, surveys, as well as the development of Bitcoin dominance and the volume of search queries.

Two things follow. First, the index is heavily shaped by Bitcoin. Several components refer directly to the largest cryptocurrency, and the dominance metric sets it against the rest. A reading of 54 therefore says little about sentiment in a small altcoin.

Second, the index contains ingredients that themselves depend on the price. Volatility and trading volume are consequences of price moves. The index thus partly trails the price rather than leading it. That is why it works poorly as an early warning and well as a description of a situation.

One index, two readings: why providers calculate differently

There is no single Fear and Greed Index. Alongside alternative.me, CoinMarketCap also runs an index of its own with its own method and its own weighting. Both carry the same name, both deliver a number between 0 and 100, and both can come out differently on the same day.

In practice that means a number without the provider named is useless. When an index reading appears in an article, a video or a social media post, the source belongs with it. Never compare one provider's reading from today with another's from last week.

This variety has a simple reason: there is no official definition of market sentiment. Each provider picks its own ingredients and weights. Stay with one source and the trend is meaningful, even if the absolute reading is not.

The contrarian idea: buy when others are afraid

The most common use of the index is a contrarian one: low readings count as an opportunity, high ones as a warning. Historically that has fitted several times across large market cycles, and the logic behind it is reasonable.

The weakness of this use lies in the time frame. An index can sit in extreme fear territory for weeks, and prices can keep falling over that stretch. Extreme fear is not a floor, it is a description. Buy at a reading of 15 and you may be looking again at a reading of 12 and a price thirty percent lower.

The same holds in reverse. Readings above 80 are not a sell signal. In strong upward phases the index stays high for months, and selling at the first greed report may mean missing the larger part of the move. The index supplies context, not timing.

Sentiment and price: what the index does not add to a chart

An honest assessment has to name this point: because several components of the index are derived from price data, its information overlaps with what a price history shows anyway. A chart with volatility and volume contains a large share of what the index condenses.

The independent contribution comes from the ingredients that do not come from the price: surveys, activity on social networks and the volume of search queries. Those parts describe the attention a market is getting. If attention rises without the price following, that is information the chart does not hold.

The value of the index therefore lies less in the number itself than in the question it prompts: does the sentiment match what the data supports? Which analytics platforms show sentiment readings alongside price, holdings and network data is something we have compared.

Limits of the index: why one number does not justify an entry

Three limits are worth knowing before you give the index weight.

It is a daily reading. Most providers publish once a day. Within a single trading day the situation can turn completely without the index reflecting it.

It is not market-wide. The components come predominantly from the largest cryptocurrencies. For Ethereum and Bitcoin it is therefore usable, for the smaller part of the market hardly at all.

And it is backward-looking in so far as it consists of price data. Part of the value describes what has already happened. Deriving an expectation from that is an assumption, not a measurement.

There is also a practical problem: sentiment readings tempt people into frequent trading. Every switch between fear and greed reads like a prompt to do something. In Germany, that frequent trading has consequences that have nothing to do with the market.

The holding period as a counterweight: what one year of holding does to sentiment

Private crypto gains in Germany fall under the framework of private disposals pursuant to section 23 of the Income Tax Act. Hold a cryptocurrency for more than a year and then sell, and the gain stays outside the tax liability. Sell within the year and the gain is taxed at your personal income tax rate, provided the threshold is exceeded. We track the current state of the political discussion on this in our overview of the holding period.

From that comes a counterweight that appears in no sentiment calculation. A sale eleven months after the purchase, triggered by an index reading above 80, can cost more than a price decline you would have sat through. The index does not know your holding period.

So before a sentiment reading leads to a decision to sell, check how long the holding in question has been sitting there. That information is in your own records, not in the index.

Using the index in a portfolio: how to fit the reading into a rule of your own

If you want to use the index, give it a fixed and small role. Three forms have proved themselves and can be checked.

As a cross-check: you have made a decision for your own reasons and look at whether market sentiment argues against it. The index confirms or contradicts; it does not decide.

As a brake: you settle in advance that you build no new positions at Extreme Greed. That is not a forecast but a limit on your own behaviour in euphoric phases.

As a metronome for a savings plan: some raise the instalment in phases of extreme fear and lower it at extreme greed. This variant needs a rule written down beforehand, or it turns into exactly the gut feeling the index was meant to replace.

What stays the same in all three forms: the rule comes before the index reading, not after it. A rule you formulate after looking at the number is not a rule.

Fear and Greed Index: a sentiment reading is not a price signal

The 54 points of October 25, 2026 say the market wants nothing unambiguous right now. On the question of whether a purchase is favourable today, they say nothing. The index is a useful thermometer and a poor alarm clock. These three steps turn it into something usable:

Settle on one source. Pick a provider and read its history over several weeks, not the daily reading from shifting sources. Which analytics platforms show sentiment data in context is set out in our comparison.

Check the holding period. Before every decision, look up the acquisition date of the holding concerned. A tax tool or portfolio tracker supplies that data without any arithmetic on your part.

Write the rule down first. Settle what a given index range triggers for you, and stick to it. To automate that, the options are in our comparison of trading bots.
