Strategy paused all bitcoin purchases during the week of October 19 through October 25, 2026, instead directing roughly $205 million in cash toward repurchasing its own preferred shares, according to a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 26.

Strategy pauses bitcoin purchases and repurchases $205 million of STRC

The SEC filing states that Strategy did not purchase or sell any bitcoin between October 19 and October 25, 2026, marking a week-long pause in the company's otherwise steady accumulation program. In the same period, the firm repurchased 2,068,459 shares of its Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock (STRC) for an aggregate $204.9 million, funded entirely with USD Cash.

As of October 25, Strategy's USD Cash balance stood at $242.4 million, down sharply after the buyback. The company reported a broader USD Reserve of $4.83 billion, which includes instruments beyond cash. The filing also notes that Strategy retains $956.8 million in remaining preferred-stock repurchase authorization, meaning the $204.9 million outlay represents only a portion of what the company could still deploy against the STRC instrument.
Bitcoin holdings remained unchanged at approximately 848,517 BTC as of October 25, acquired over time for an aggregate cost of $64.02 billion, reflecting an average purchase price of roughly $75,446 per coin including fees and expenses.
What the STRC preferred-share repurchase signals

A preferred-share repurchase reduces the amount of the security outstanding in external hands, lowering future dividend obligations tied to those shares. For STRC specifically, which carries a variable rate, buying back shares at current market prices can reduce the cost of carrying that instrument on Strategy's balance sheet going forward. For related coverage, see Strategy Reports $193M in STRC Repurchases, Acquires 267 BTC.

The use of USD Cash, rather than proceeds from equity issuance or asset sales, is notable. Strategy spent most of its liquid cash on the buyback, leaving $242.4 million in USD Cash after the transaction closed. That is a measurable compression of the company's near-term liquidity buffer, even as its broader USD Reserve remained at $4.83 billion. For related coverage, see Strive Buys 2,822 Bitcoin, Holdings Reach 35,595 BTC.

This is not the first time Strategy has combined a bitcoin-buying pause with STRC activity. In a prior filing, Strategy reported $193 million in STRC repurchases alongside a small 267 BTC acquisition, suggesting the company treats preferred-share management as a recurring capital-allocation lever rather than a one-off event.

Bulls on Strategy's approach argue that reducing the variable-rate STRC float strengthens the balance sheet by trimming future preferred dividend exposure, particularly if interest rates or benchmark rates remain elevated. Bears may counter that deploying $204.9 million in cash away from bitcoin accumulation, at a moment when BTC trades near $79,636, represents a meaningful opportunity cost for a firm whose core thesis centers on bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset.

How the move fits Strategy's bitcoin-focused approach

Strategy has built its identity around continuous bitcoin accumulation, and any week without a purchase tends to draw investor attention. The company's total BTC position, now valued at market prices well above its $64.02 billion cost basis, underscores how much of the firm's net asset value is tied to bitcoin's price trajectory. At current spot prices, the 848,517 BTC holdings carry a market value above $67 billion.

The decision to redirect capital toward STRC rather than bitcoin reflects a dual mandate that Strategy has increasingly signaled: accumulate bitcoin when conditions favor it, but also actively manage the preferred-share instruments used to finance prior accumulation. Strategy previously paused BTC buys while establishing a $1.6 billion cash pool following a $2 billion capital raise, indicating that periodic pauses are part of an active treasury management cycle rather than a departure from the bitcoin strategy.

The $956.8 million in remaining repurchase authorization for preferred stock means Strategy could theoretically execute several more tranches of STRC buybacks at a similar scale before exhausting the program. Whether those buybacks come at the expense of near-term bitcoin purchases, or whether the company raises additional capital to fund both simultaneously, will be a key question for investors tracking MSTR and its treasury disclosures in the weeks ahead.

The broader crypto market offered little directional clarity during the same period. The crypto Fear and Greed Index registered a reading of 50, denoting a neutral sentiment environment, while bitcoin traded with a 24-hour change of roughly negative 0.8%. A prior episode where bitcoin slid toward $70,000 following a Strategy BTC-related announcement serves as a reminder that market participants watch the company's weekly disclosures closely for signals about institutional demand.

Strategy's next weekly 8-K filing will show whether the company resumed bitcoin purchases or extended the pause, and whether STRC repurchases continued. With $956.8 million still authorized and only $242.4 million in USD Cash remaining after this week's transaction, the shape of that financing will matter as much as the bitcoin totals themselves.
